I ran WizTree last month after October's Patch Tuesday, looking to see why a Win11 image backup had grown by a few GB since the last update. One of the things I found was a LOT of Store related files in the System File Information folder -- a couple GB worth. I had already deleted all Restore Points -- that's where they're stored -- so I used Windows icacls to get access to the protected folder, finding that those files didn't appear to actually be located in that folder, so I could not delete them. A Windows repair reinstall didn't help. So I set a Restore Point, then restored it -- the restore didn't work, but afterwards the files that shouldn't have been there were gone.
Fast forward to November, and I'm now checking every copy of Windows with WizTree after updating, removing old update files etc. And I found the same problem on another device, though not as bad. So I created a Restore Point & restored it... after 3-4 hours I gave up and powered it off -- it might have been that System Restore was broken, or it might have been that the device [an All In One (like a giant tablet)] is really under-powered. Anyway, back in Win10 the garbage files were still there. [Insert all sorts of bad words] I did some more Googling, and after a few false starts I downloaded the newest Ubuntu Linux ISO, using Rufus to put it on a bootable USB stick. In Win10 on the AIO I turned off Restore Points entirely, booted to the USB stick, and got rid of the folders in System File Information. [Ubuntu is one of the Linux distros (versions) that works with Secure Boot] Back in Win10, everything worked fine, I turned Restore Points back on, restarted to double check etc., and everything's fine.
Judging from many of the posts I found Googling, it seems this problem is usually found when the Store is misbehaving or broken, so it may be of concern for reasons other than the wasted disk space.
