GOTD uses CAPTCHAs, so I thought this might be relevant, if only to prevent anyone from criticizing their use, if only to themselves.
The newscientist[.]com site published a clickbait article making that claim, alleging that a scientific study had proven that bots are better than humans when it came to successfully completing CAPTCHAs. We all hate CHAPTCHAs, making it such a good clickbait heading that several sites have picked it up over the last couple few days, and more are likely to do the same. Of course you can't just read the article at newscientist[.]com -- you have to sign in.
Problem is, the actual scientific study cited doesn't mention bots, other than to say that they're the reason CAPTCHAs exist. I read the 13+ pages. I checked to see if there might be another study, searching under 2 of the authors of the study that were mentioned, not finding a thing. Then I asked Bing Chat if the main author cited actually said anything like that statement that bots were better at CAPTCHAs. When the responses all included or referenced newscientist[.]com, I asked if there were any other mentions:
I’m sorry but I couldn’t find any other sources that mention Gene Tsudik’s statement and do not reference or link to newscientist.com.
