I thought this *might* help someone someday trying to run one of the [really] older games.
When XP finally lost support from Microsoft, I moved the app I use to monitor software installations, InstallWatch Pro, to Win7 32-bit -- I simply couldn't get it working in Win7 64-bit. Well, here we go again, and this time Win7 is on the chopping block at the end of the year. I had tried the app in Win10 32-bit ages ago, with no success, but figured I'd give it another go... still won't work, though now it requires installing NTVDM as a prerequisite [the app won't even try to run without it].
[NTVDM, or the NT Virtual DOS Machine, is a system component introduced in 1993 for all IA-32 editions of the Windows NT family (not included with 64-bit versions of the OS). This component allows the execution of 16-bit Windows applications on 32-bit Windows operating systems... per Microsoft here: docs.microsoft[.]com/en-us/windows/compatibility/ntvdm-and-16-bit-app-support]
A surprise though is that this XP software will run in Win10 64-bit now, and interestingly, it will run with the app's compatibility set to XP Svc Pk3, or not -- the app seems to run the same either way. And, this Windows compatibility appears to be continuing to evolve... the app will run in Win11 64-bit too, But, it won't run properly [it locks up] if you set the compatibility to XP [or any other Windows version] -- you have to leave the compatibility check box clear.
