From what I've seen published until now, it seemed like politics as usual -- point to a company in another country as the bad guys, hope to get votes because of it, & satisfy rival companies that donated to your political campaigns. If the gov said anything different, gave any reasons, it was behind closed doors, likely limited to allied intelligence agencies.
According to CNN, & referenced by The Verge, Huawei was cutting deals with small telcos that were too good to be true -- Huawei, like other big corporations, is about making money, yet on these deals it wasn't making any. So why would it sort of give away products to be used on cell phone towers? Turns out those killer deals were all close to military bases, leading the FBI to believe that it was all about intercepting military &/or intelligence related communications.
