Too many manufacturers cut corners, & not just in Asia... In this case CyberPower skimps on the price of the glue it uses to protect circuit board components from vibrations that might cause leads to break. It's not a problem limited to CyberPower, but common among Asian Electronics manufacturers. This cheap glue is not chemically stable long term -- it becomes both corrosive & electrically conductive over time. And when you're dealing with line voltage at higher currents, neither is a good thing -- though problems with the unit not working are likely most common, fires are possible and have been reported. It's the potential fire part that makes for a good headline, and why Neowin highlighted a year or so old YouTube video showing the problem. And it is real... I took the back off a CyberPower UPS I've had for just short of 4 years, and there's a roughly 1" diameter patch on the board that's pretty badly corroded. I don't know that it would have resulted in anything more than the UPS not working correctly as it got worse, but not working is reason enough to replace it. FWIW, I thought about going back to the APC brand, until I read user reviews talking about how their APC UPS caught fire.
