Industrial plants and things like electrical power plants, water treatment plants, the electrical grid etc. all have computers controlling them, & in many [most?] cases they're using old computers running old software that's increasingly vulnerable since the corp. networks they connect to are also connected to the internet. In the years since the US & Israel allegedly targeted Iran with Stuxnet [ wikipedia[.]org/wiki/Stuxnet ], attacks on these industrial controls have become both more common and more advanced.
Gartner predicts that the financial impact of CPS attacks resulting in fatal casualties will reach over $50 billion by 2023. Even without taking the value of human life into account, the costs for organizations in terms of compensation, litigation, insurance, regulatory fines and reputation loss will be significant. Gartner also predicts that most CEOs will be personally liable for such incidents.
