Microsoft has a free file recovery tool, Windows File Recovery, available in the Windows Store for recovering lost / deleted files & folders. The big catch is that's it's command line only, with lots of options -- I saved the instruction page on Microsoft's site as a PDF, and it takes up 9 pages (!). However, AOMEI has been kind enough to create a GUI for the app and offer it for free, though I can't say it'll be available forever -- I've seen a couple of their free utilities come & go. The GUI is simple & easy, though the Microsoft app itself is missing some features you'll see in paid, 3rd party file recovery software, like the option to pause & save a file scan to continue working on later. WinfrGUI comes packaged in WinfrGUI_Setup.exe -- installed it takes up a little less than 15MB, and a new folder gets added to ProgramData. You can copy the program's folder, WinfrGUI, and run it as a portable app, though it again will add a folder to ProgramData, so strictly speaking it isn't 100% portable. Unfortunately it will not run in WinPE [after booting to a USB stick with WinPE] though the included Microsoft command line app, named WinFR.exe, will. The version numbers of that app & the one from the Windows Store don't match, so I can't say how current it is. In this copy of Win10 the Store app is installed to: C:\ Program Files\ WindowsApps\ Microsoft.WindowsFileRecovery_0.1.20151.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\ ntfssalv_cli_exe\ WinFR.exe . [To access it I'd probably copy the existing folder, or from a backup archive, & take ownership of that copied folder, rather than un-protect the WindowsApps folder Windows uses.]
