I can remember before you could install to different drives. I used to have all my games in my Steam library installed, numbering in the thousands. I'd filled a 2TB drive, then decided to create a spanned drive with another 2TB drive. With the number of games I was buying back then; it didn't take that long to fill the spanned drive. The only drawback was that I had to start from scratch once I'd created the spanned drive, reinstalling everything, including Steam.
These days I only keep those games I think I'll be playing over the next several months, and usually all of the Humble Choice games I subscribe to. Back then I think my broadband connection was only 10MB, whereas now you can install a 30GB game in several minutes.
