The usage figures I've seen, e.g. versions of Win10 etc., all rely on monitoring what OS someone's using when they visit web sites, and Ed's article says he used figures from a few different services that did just that. So if/when a VM running 7 connected to a monitored site, it was counted, but if like me you rarely use the browser in a VM, it won't be counted.
Ed also reminds us that Microsoft does provide security updates for Win7 to corp. users who are willing to pay extra. And whatever they add to Win7 to allow the updates [for those who paid whatever fees] has been hacked, so some percentage of those regular users [not corp] are also protected.
Thanks for explaining. A few days ago, I made a new VirtualBox virtual machine running Window 7 Starter to test the giveaways. I "installed" Portable Apps FireFox and Chrome. Then I used your note on using Firefox for web apps as described on https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/468189 to make an FF shortcut to the Giveawayoftheday page. Because when I am testing a giveaway, I check their page for comments and to see when it was given away earlier, etc.
So I now will be counted as a Windows 7 user. Or is giveawayoftheday[.]com not monitored on OS-use of its visitors?

I haven't been able to find out if the GOTD site uses a site monitoring service like Statcounter that publishes global stats -- Google Analytics for example gives individual sites info about visitors to that site, but doesn't publish overall data for all the sites where it's used, so your VM may or may not be counted.
