I'm not sure why the emphasis on *secure*... the only thing out of the ordinary is a decent tip to [hopefully] prevent access to other devices on your home network.
Note that you can download ready-made VMs for Linux or Windows, the latter direct from Microsoft, with the caveat that you'll have to redo it after 90 days. You can run Win10 without activating it just fine, and you can very often restore a backup of your running copy of Win10 to a .vhd, and use that as a VM, though it won't run as fast or as smoothly in my experience as installing Win10 fresh to a new VM. You can run Win7 in a VM, but if you have newer hardware, you might need something called wufuc to get Windows Update working to get it current, at least to the official end of support.
