I got worried when I saw comments that a couple few laptops wouldn’t restart or reboot after installing DMclone, so I took a quick look using my V/Box Win7 32-bit VM, including doing a quick partition clone.
First off, the app seems like they used EaseUS Disk Copy, substituting a minimal GUI without any way or option to use some of the functions available in Disk Copy, e.g. a bootable USB stick or rescue environ on disk. The product page says that you can save an image backup using the app, but the simple GUI doesn’t show that option and it’s not mentioned in the online help file. It will adjust the target partition size if/when the source and destination drives are not the same size. The installation is straightforward enough, adding the program’s folder, Start Menu & desktop shortcuts, and a couple of EaseUS drivers, EuDskCp.sys and EuEumDk.sys. Windows registry gets the needed keys to make the drivers work, plus keys for the app & uninstall.
While there are files included in the program’s folder that might change the bootloader [BCD] files, you’re not given any means to use them – it appears just something left or held over from the EaseUS app. The VM’s BCD remained unchanged after installation & after running a clone operation. Installing the Windows app didn’t do anything that should have any effect on starting Windows, and neither did the quick test clone I performed. Drivers however were added, and those could be incompatible with other drivers or software installed on the laptops that would no longer run.
