With the lockdowns & all Microsoft has been advertising Teams like crazy, at least on TV where we live. With all of Zoom's security problems Teams sounds like a good idea, and after all, they advertised a family oriented version. However, That's not here yet -- signing up for the family version means they'll notify you sometime in the future. You can still sign up for the free version of Teams, and you'll find all sorts of sites with info, and as I tried for a few hours, none of it worked.
What kept happening is that during the signup it says that your email address has already been used to set up an account, and it gives you the opportunity to use another email address. When I entered another address however I got the same message, and couldn't get any further. Google on that problem and you get tech info on how to edit settings in Azure Active Directory, which of course none of us has access to. The problem it seems is that Teams is designed around companies & organizations, and if Microsoft's modifying Teams setup to allow for individual users, they're not there yet.
SO how did I get it to work? When it asked for an alternative email address I had to give it an address on a personal domain I own, one that no one else could have possibly used, e.g. mike@[MyDomain].net . That got me to a 2nd dialog asking whether I was using it for work, school, or personal home use. If you select home use, it sends you to Skype -- I guess their family version really isn't here yet. Selecting work works just fine, though you need to fill in a [Bogus?] company name. Once you get that far you can start setting things up, inviting other people to join the team you set up etc.
