What's notable is the continuing issue for win7, where the update may break networking. The linked Neowin page includes the link for the security-only update without this issue.

Today it's unknown [outside of Microsoft] how aggressively Microsoft will push this upgrade/update out via automatic updates -- their blog suggests it will be at a very measured, tempered pace, as they collect data on which hardware works OK, & what has problems. Of course they collect that data based on what the win10 1809 installation routine reports back to home base, so if you're one of the lucky few who get targeted 1st using your particular hardware &/or device, you're the canary in the mine that warns everyone else. And sadly when/if things go badly, those canaries are screwed. So yeah, if you're running win10 pro, if you want to be cautious, pause this version upgrade until more reports are in.

If you're anxious to get the upgrade out of the way OTOH, checking for updates in Windows Update **may** get you the new version, or not -- Microsoft is throttling those updates, so it's more a matter of luck whether it shows up for you or not. You can download the ISOs etc. using the usual Microsoft Windows upgrade tool, though I'd expect there will be a little bit of a delay before this is generally available -- it took about 1/2 - 3/4 of a day a month ago when they 1st tried releasing 1809.

Finally, if you're running win10, don't want the version upgrade just yet, but Windows Update isn't showing today's security updates for your version of win10, download & run the updates manually rather than clicking Check for updates -- you can find the KB numbers along with links to download in front page articles at neowin[.]net for example.

Just adding this link... Rich Woods isn't saying not to install the upgrade to 1809, but rather pointing out [as I did] that now is not the time to click the button to Get updates in win10 unless you're willing to upgrade versions immediately.

Adding another link -- Microsoft has published info on 3 more problems with win10 1809.

1) "Mapped drives may fail to reconnect after starting and logging onto a Windows device."

2) "Microsoft and Trend Micro have identified a compatibility issue with Trend Micro’s OfficeScan and Worry-Free Business Security software..." If one of those security apps is detected the upgrade/install of 1809 will stop.

3) "... Microsoft Edge tabs may stop working when a device is configured with AMD Radeon HD2000 or HD4000 series video cards." If one of these cards is detected the upgrade/install of 1809 will stop.

The link I posted earlier for Win10 history now shows the upgrade blocked with F5 VPN, and blocked if iCloud is present. Both are incompatible.

Well, it's been 2 days, though one of those was a holiday in the US [Thanksgiving], so it doesn't really count, and Microsoft added another problem to the stack with win10 1809... This time the problem is with Intel CPUs -- Intel shipped graphics drivers [for those CPUs with built-in GPUs] to OEMs that supported features that win10 1809 does not. So for now the 1809 upgrade is blocked on those effected devices.

Have faith though -- they're sure to get this stuff ironed out by the time the Spring 2020 upgrade gets pushed out. [I Hope]

2 more days, and there's word of more problems... Seems Microsoft updated their info for November's initial cumulative update for win10 1809 -- there's probably another cumulative update for 1809 coming this month [November], and this applies to the 1st one, KB4467708.

Under Known Issues:

After installing this update, some users cannot set Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps.
In some cases, Microsoft Notepad or other Win32 programs cannot be set as the default.

And

After installing this update, users may not be able to use the Seek Bar in Windows Media Player when playing specific files.

Perhaps my earlier optimism -- that they'd get everything working by the Spring of next year -- might have been premature(?).

Today [11/27/18] new cumulative updates are out for supported Windows 10 versions, other than the new, 1809 version (?). I'd guess that they're still trying to wrap up a fix for one of the problems I posted yesterday. Windows 7 & 8 updates likely aren't far behind.

Microsoft has released an update to the new Windows 10 version 1809 that fixes some problems, but only to insiders on the Preview ring [Microsoft's volunteer beta testers in the fast & slow rings have moved on to what's going to be the spring update in 2019].

Apple fixed the problem with iCloud.

Aidan Finn sells & teaches about Microsoft's cloud, and he writes for Petri[.]com. He lays the blame for Microsoft's mess on their CEO, Nadella, writing that before he became CEO, quality slipped in the division that he led... "I saw software quality slip badly leading up to the 2012 releases of software in his group – particularly in System Center. Bug reports went ignored and bad issues made it into RTM releases and well beyond. [Then] when software testers became irrelevant – that wasn’t good."

This horrendous rollout of win10 1809 has me a bit worried thinking about the next version upgrade in the Spring. Back when the CPU vulnerabilities [Spectre & related] became common knowledge, a Google engineer came up with a fix that didn't hobble the CPU. Microsoft has finally adopted it, and is supposed to include it in that Spring update/upgrade. Win10 1809 didn't include anything revolutionary -- it was maybe ironically targeted at making sure things worked properly -- so what's going to happen when they actually do make changes to the way that Windows' core works?

Meanwhile, Google's continuing to improve Chromebooks now that they have Android app integration. Could be more folks and businesses move on from Windows next year.

On the evening of 12/5, Microsoft started pushing out the cumulative update for win10 1809 -- the same one [or KB number anyway] that it had pushed to Insiders in the preview ring.

KB4469342 has Not shown up for me in Windows Update -- I had to click the button to check for updates, which to me was a little bit weird... I'd held off on doing any updating to our less used devices, e.g. the miniPC I use as a HTPC, because after updating them right off the bat to win10 18009, with all the problems that surfaced, I wasn't sure Microsoft was going to keep it, or release another build for the [behind schedule] fall upgrade instead. *To me* this patch release signified that they were keeping it after all, so I started updating those devices yesterday. Windows Update automatically found the earlier cumulative update, Flash update etc. and installed them. But not KB4469342 (?!) -- I had to have Windows Update check manually for it to show up.

I guess Microsoft's dysfunction continues...

On 12/17 Microsoft reached a minor milestone of sorts with win10 1809 -- the October version of win10 is now officially available to anyone that wants it, If your device is not blocked due to one of the several exceptions I've posted earlier. If you click the button in Windows Update to Check for Updates you'll start the upgrade process -- before 12/17 I guess Microsoft was still throttling the number of updates, so if you clicked the button you may or may not have gotten win10 1809.
