Microsoft has removed the new win10 1809 upgrade/update from its web site, removed it from Windows Update, and is asking anyone who already downloaded the ISO not to install it.
The reason is that the upgrade in some cases deleted user files, and worse, when that happened, it did not preserve them in the Windows.old folder that can be used to roll back to the prior win10 version. Apparently not mentioned were the problems of Task Mgr. being broken, some Intel drivers being incompatible, and most recently, issues with Edge [the Internet Explorer replacement] Mail, & other Microsoft store apps not being able to connect to the internet. The newly released Server 2019 was also pulled.
This highlights weaknesses with Windows 10 Feedback Hub... for all their PR about how Microsoft uses AI to improve users' experience etc., apparently the only feedback anyone actually looks at are those posts that have been up-voted enough to reach some threshold. The problem with the 1809 upgrade deleting user files had been reported, but no one had bothered to pay attention to it. That said, I'm not sure personally that the people posting feedback represent any sort of cross section of win10 users, so relying on win10 fanboys for quality assurance, &/or to determine the directions of win10 development, was always more or less just justification for cost cutting measures, e.g. getting rid of development staff. And as the last release, as well as this one point out, if that's the case it was more a pipe dream than anything else.
