The F.B.I. & U.S. Homeland Security are saying to re-boot home & small office routers ASAP. The VPNFilter malware, discovered by Cisco Talos, has 3 stages -- the 2nd & 3rd stage, which can actually do something bad, don't survive the re-boot. The 1st stage phones home to the cybercriminals' C2C [Command & Control] for directions & downloads, but authorities have seized the URL/address for that C2C.
While 14 router models are known to be vulnerable to the malware, they don't know how they became infected with stage 1, so they're advising everyone to reboot just in case, regardless the brand & model you use. After a re-boot infected routers are expected to phone home, using the address now held by authorities, and they're tracking the routers that try to connect.
Cisco and Symantec are actually advising a factory reset to get rid of the malware, though that means setting the router back up afterward.
