   Digging into the details of a Microsoft announcement on the formal Windows 10 & Office 365 development cycles [Windows 10 BTW will get new versions or builds in March & September each year], Thurrott found: "... an interesting statement of the end-of-life of traditional Office as we know it."

   “Starting October 13, 2020 … Office perpetual in mainstream support will be required to connect to Office 365 services,” the firm noted. “We’re providing more than three years’ notice to give IT time to plan and budget for this change. Until this new requirement goes into effect in 2020, Office 2010, Office 2013 and Office 2016 perpetual clients will still be able to connect to Office 365 services.”

   Paul Thurrott tries to explain what's going on, ending his article with:

   Confusing? Sure. But it does look like Microsoft will keep traditional Office around for the foreseeable future, which should please the Luddites out there. But don’t be surprised to see the firm address this when Office 2020, or whatever it’s called, is announced. Something tells me that the days of “Office perpetual” are not really all that perpetual.

   I couldn't help but notice the list of versions that can connect to Office 365 services. It starts with Office 2010. I'm currently running Office 2007 (still receiving updates, too). That means I don't have those hooks. Yes, there are a few hiccups with what I have -- namely the new problem with the helps and and old issue with the sort window growing if you use high DPI settings, but that's minor.

   I don't want to depend on the internet being there when I want to run Excel. I don't want to take a chance that my spreadsheet is in the cloud for who knows who to hack into (even though they are very innocent). I want my privacy and Microsoft is trying to take that away. As long as it works -- even if I do lose support, I'll use what I've got - thank you!
