   I needed to run CCleaner on my laptop running Windows 8.1 today and it, as it does about one a month on one or the other of my computers, told me there was an update (5.24). No problem, I thought. Just do it!

   Not so "no problem" as it turned out.

   It seemed to be taking a long time for the update like it was just a stub and it never has been before. Then I noticed it installed Google Chrome and I saw NO check or opt-out option.

   I do NOT want Chrome. I want no part of Chrome. I resent having it slipped in like that without even telling me!

   I have two questions. Is there a way out of the install and if not - what is a good replacement for it? I'm not gonna do a revo-uninstall option to remove it every month and I do not intend to keep it. Not updating is also not a good solution. The only valid options are to have an opt-out or a replacement. I'm not a happy camper right now!

   I updated CCleaner on windows 7 and 8.1.
   While updating CCleaner there was no Google Chrome being offered on windows 7 (and Chrome wasn't installed )
   But on Windows 8 CCleaner offered an optional install of Google Chrome and the Chrome toolbar.
   So my guess is there's something wrong with the setup script.

   Ccleaner has always been one of my favorite programs.But lately Piriform seems a bit pushy to get people to buy their pro version.

   Still, if you want to be on the safe side you could always try the portable version.

   I downloaded the latest setup file and it still has the option to untick "install Google Chrome as my default browser".

   I'm running Windows 7 but I didn't run the update from inside the program, I downloaded and ran the setup file. The program update might just be running the default installation routine on your PC.

   Thanks for the info Robert but the link just gives a mostly blank page with header and footer links for other things. I found the portable from another direction and it ended up on that same page -- no download of the zip. I tried with IE rather than my preferred Firefox and it did the same thing. They're not allowing that portable right now.

   Strange.I have no problems whatsoever downloading the zipped portable.
   I do have a blank page too but FF and IE both present a tiny pop-up window to download the file yes or no.
   Feel free to give me an 'admiral seed' if you want the file.
   :)

   I tried you link again and got the normal download pop-up to download the .zip file. I have no idea what happened before.

   I updated mine also but no indication to add Chrome, even though I already have it. Win 10 here and I always go straight to the products page for updates, if I can. Too many times a link has sent me some where else.

   If I was you, I would do a full virus and malware check. Just in case one slipped passed.

   I did a Malwarebytes check right after getting things fixed there. I had just done the Patch Tuesday update on that machine. I did a full virus scan today (a day earlier than normal) and it came out clean.

   FWIW I always use the portable versions of Piriform apps -- it makes updating faster/easier with multiple Windows installs -- & have never had a problem doing it that way.

   But lately Piriform seems a bit pushy to get people to buy their pro version.
