I have been downloading this for over 2 hours and it's not even 1/4 of the way through. Is something wrong or are there just too many people trying to download at the same time?

There are a lot of "slow download" comments on the game page. If you're not using a download accelerator that will open multiple connections then you might try one.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend one as the one I used for a long time,"DownThemAll", no longer works with Firefox or Pale Moon. Maybe somebody else will have a suggestion.
Otherwise, you might try "Pausing" the download and then "Resuming" to see if it will help. However, there are also comments about the download not "Resuming" so there's some risk that you'll lose what you've already downloaded.

I'm going to have to leave soon and don't like leaving my computer on so I'll try that and if it doesn't work I'll just forget about getting the game. Another GGOTD fail. If I abort the download will it leave any files on my hard drive?

If you just "cancel" the download it will probably leave the partial download in a temporary directory (something like "users/your account/app data/local/temp"). If you "delete" the download it should get rid of the partial.
However, as you're going to try again later I'd suggest just "Pausing", putting the computer in "sleep mode" and then resuming when you back when hopefully the problem is resolved. It should also work if you power down the PC, you'd just have to find and open your download manager to resume it.

Since the game was kindly provided by MPC, when I saw 11-12 hours download time, I just went there. I downloaded the MPC downloader for the game [~2MB], ran that in my V/Box XP VM, & downloaded the setup file in 3 minutes. Then I let the installation complete, 7-zipped the MyPlayCity folder, & copied that to a folder in the win7 host -- I'll expand back out on my wife's PC later.

27k d/l speed, ETA 9+ hours, cancelled the d/l (even if I wanted to leave the browser running that long the d/l would not complete in time to install the game) ...even an old dialup modem was 56k
