This made the rounds of several Windows tech web sites back around September, 2015, but it's now taken a few steps forward, becoming more easily usable. It still remains a hack. I would say unsupported by Microsoft, but Microsoft never did much to support WMC in 7, & less in 8.
Many voices will say just to use something else... Some say to use another media center app in Windows, some will say to use another [usually Android] device entirely, many will say just use a smart TV, and on & on & frankly on... there are so very many ways to consume video nowadays that it would be difficult just to list the main categories without missing something.
WMC does some stuff that nothing else will, & there are folks who've got a collection of videos, often from DVDs, already set up in win7/8 WMC, & they like their video life just fine as it is. For those folks, this WMC hack is most likely doable.

FWIW...
I have a HDHomerun Prime box that uses a cable card, has 3 tuners, & makes decrypted premium cable channels available to WMC over our network. I can watch & record HBO, Showtime, Starz etc. on any PC/laptop/device running WMC connected to our network. The company that makes the box is working on new software, but it won't be free, & it's not publicly released yet. There are no other cable card alternatives with this box that I've been able to find. It will not work in a win7 VM because that doesn't meet WMC's DRM requirements to enable a cable card. One of the channels I need to record is TNT, which is not available to me streaming for free [e.g. Amazon charges $3 per episode], which is why I originally went for recording instead of streaming.
There are other options to achieve the stuff that I want to do, but I tried this to determine if WMC in 10 was a possibility for the future, & it is. It works, at least for now. So that's one of several options for my family to consider.
