Quick note in case it helps...
Lots of headphones, in-ear & on-ear, intended for use with cell phones on sale lately. Most it seems have some sort of mic, often part of the cable, & these headphones may have additional controls on the cable too. The headphone part is really no different than what you'd use with a PC or MP3 player or anything else, but with a 4 connector plug [rather than the usual 3 conductor version] they may or may not work with stuff other than your cell phone. I learned the hard way...
I picked up an Apple compatible set of headphones [MUCH cheaper on sale than non-cell phone alternatives by the same manufacturer], finding the [thankfully replaceable] cable wouldn't work with the desktop I/O & volume control for my Soundblaster ZX soundcard. Counting from the tip of the plug, the 3rd strip or conductor is for ground, & the 4th for the mic + controls -- Android versions may have those 2 reversed. If the socket for a 3 conductor plug contacts the wrong one, in my case the 4th for the mic, bad sound happens -- another socket for the same generic 3 conductor plug might contact the 3rd, having no problems with this Apple compatible cord.
In my case since the cord was replaceable I simply ordered one off ebay. The only difficult part was guessing from the picture which cable might fit -- where the cable inserts on the headphones is pretty small in diameter, and on most the part of the plug you hold onto to plug it in would be too large. [The manufacturer sold regular cables (w/out mic) too, but I wouldn't pay $20.] If/when the cable won't unplug from the headphone some adapters may work as-is, or could rig a small adapter box or extension cable.
At any rate just wanted to point this out in case it helped anyone.
On another, *maybe* related note, I also found that you can get generic headphone ear cushions or pads on ebay... Many, including a now old pair of Denon DJ headphones I have, use cushions that I can best describe as fitting like a shower cap -- the opening is smaller & elastic. That part of the cushion fits into a thin groove going all the way around the ear piece. A J10/6.00mm crochet hook worked wonderfully for installing the new ones.
In this case the new cushions weren't as soft, but besides being cheaper they were new -- with my headphones out of production for years, & with not all that many sold when new, I figured at best the odds would be 50/50 whether I'd be buying leftovers under the Denon part number that would Very soon rot just like the old ones, because they'd be just as old as the originals.
