My computer is running at a snail pace. I have a feeling it is my antivirus but could that effect everything? Things got really weird after I downloaded Kronville on Sun. I immediately uninstalled it.) Thanks.

Actually it wasn't even showing in my Revo Uninstaller list
I just deleted the folderPosted 8 years ago # -
If something is running in the background, even the antivirus, it could affect everything if it's using most of the resources.
I don't see how Kronville would have caused it. It may be an innocent victim. I suggest a full anti-virus run to check.
As for the uninstall, you did right. The "install" was simply an extraction from a compressed file (in this case a .rar file). That's just a copy. There is no register manipulation so an uninstall is simply a deletion of the program folder. You might want to check places like Program Data or AppData (both normally hidden folders) for your user information on the game. That may be left behind but it's not going to do anything except take up space.

If I remove Avast, do you recommend Avira or is another free program better. I know there's a thread on this somewhere but it is too hard to look on my phone
Posted 8 years ago # -
I'm not saying you should remove anything -- just run it to check for any hidden problems. I have used several over the years but have only used free versions for the past 10 years or so. My changes have been for personal reasons. I currently use Microsoft Security Essentials on my Desktop (Windows 7) and it's successor, Windows Defender on my Laptop (Windows 8.1). I also use Malwarebytes Free on both machines.
It's a very very very broad subject and so much is personal preference.

The reason I think Avast may be the problem is because when I upgraded Avast a long time ago it slowed things down and after I uninstalled it things got much faster. I did an upgrade about a month ago and it
got a little slower. N ow they want me to do another upgrade. It seems too coincidentalPosted 8 years ago # -
Terri,
That sounds like me with McAfee back when I had Windows ME. I was having trouble doing anything. I was working with Microsoft and they recommended I do a destructive Restore. I did not want to do that. I tried uninstalling McAfee. Everything cleared up. It just used so many resources, you could not run a browser at all!
I have never used McAfee since then except for the short time with my new desktop while I was switching over from the trial pre-installed to Defender. I found I could NOT turn off McAfee -- I had to uninstall it to get it out. There is no way to temporarily turn it off.
You may be right about Avast. I've never used that one.

Sundays game was over 1 GB. If you deleted the programmme folder, it could still be in the waste basket. And possibly you did not delete the large zip-download? Next there is also the possibility that %temp% contains remnants of the game download. If your disk is quite full, you could benefit by running ccleaner. Also, clean up old giveaway-ziops from your download folder. You cannot do anything with them after the 24 hour giveaway period is over. If you have a lot of games you do not play very often, consider zipping their programme folders, copying them to an external drive and deleting them from your hard drive. Run ccleaner after such a deletion.

Terri, it sounds like Avast didn't upgrade correctly. I'd:
- download the Avast Uninstall Utility
- download Avast Free Edition
- uninstall Avast
- boot to Safe Mode, run the uninstall utility
- reboot and install the new versionFWIW, there was a report some time ago on Ashraf's site saying that Avira did use less resources than the other free programs but the new Avast pitch is "Lighter than ever. The days when an antivirus took over your PC are long gone. Avast Antivirus is lighter and faster than ever, so you won’t even know that it’s there." So, your experience is not what you should expect.

I uninstalled Avast and it got a little better but still too slow
I opened the computer in Safe Mode and still slow. The only other thing I can think to do is a factory restore. I f that doesn,t work it is time for a new cputer Mine is about 5 years oldPosted 8 years ago # -
In that case, you might investigate what krypteller wrote - that you're running out of free space on your hard drive.
Click Start, click "computer" and see how much free space you have left on your system drive. The old rule was that you needed 20% free space but that was before our massive drives. You're probably going to want 20-30 GB for the page file and System Restore (each Restore Point can take 1 GB). If the drive is full then the oldest Restore Point is deleted before a new one can be created.
You might also check how fragmented your drive is. If you're running Windows 7 or above then the system will automatically defrag the drive but the default is each Wednesday at 1 AM. If your PC is routinely turned off at night then it's not getting defragged. Click Start, enter "defrag", select "Disk Defragmenter" from the list, click on your system drive, then click "Analyze". Manually defrag as needed (I'd run Ccleaner first to get rid of the junk files).

Wow I had no idea was not working if the computer is off at night.
Posted 8 years ago # -
The space seems to be OK. The bar is only about one third across.
Posted 8 years ago # -
I am trying the defrag now.

I love you ChrisS. Things seem to be moving a lot faster now. I'll let you know when I'm back to normal.

Apparently my hard drive is failing so a new computer it is. The one file I need to find is the one that saves my score for Around the World in 80 Days. Where is that saved?
Posted 8 years ago # -
I'm torn between "that's a shame about your hard drive" and "Congratulations on your new computer!".
If it's the same game, this post Stuck in Around the World in 80 Days says that you want the file "gameinfo.xml" located in C:\My Games\Around the World in 80 Days\base. However, other comments say that game may be installed under C:\Program Files\Around the World in 80 day so you might need to search for "gameinfo.xml".

Terri,
Be sure to back up any other data you have on your computer before you transition to a new machine. Installs aren't important unless they were just extractions or copies since you'll be better off re-installing new (and hoping everything works on a new machine).
I transitioned to a laptop this past spring and found a 99.3% success rate in games transitioned to the new machine -- some required a bit of creative thinking and work to get them to work properly.
I did some checking for that file you wanted.
On my Windows 7 desktop (and probably my Windows 8.1 laptop -- not powered up at the moment), I found the file in C:\ProgramData\Playrix Entertainment\Around the World. There was no "base". That folder contained 2 files: gameinfo.xml and log.htm.
Note that ProgramData is often a hidden folder. One of the first things I do with a new machine is unhide ProgramData and C:\Users\==username==\AppData before they get too big.
Good Luck with a new machine and with Windows 10. I think it will be hard to avoid getting that now.

Thanks so much but unfortunately the old computer died before I could find and copy that file and a few other things I really needed. Goodbye my 110 million points and over 1200 lives. I guess it's more challenging starting from scratch.
The stupidest thing was to not print my password file before the computer died. I have it on a flash drive (which I fortunately updated a few days ago) but every program I tried to open it with asked for my password which I didn't remember. A real Catch 22. I finally got it to open in WordPad and printed it.
Now the tedium of customizing a new computer. At least I have a working computer again.

Terri,
That's why you should do backups along the way. I have been saving my stat file for Ricochet Infinity because I've been building that up for over 3 years to about 193,600 rings (I've gotten all 5 golden rings on every level -- even if I did have to keep replaying some levels several times to get them all).
You might be able to take out the hard drive from the old machine and take it to someone who can access the data for you.
Tedium -- and yet fun (for geekys like me) to configure a new computer. My husband and I always have a set of "setup" text files that are in an area that is routinely backed up so even in the worse case, we can get things going again at a basic level and know what we are dealing with.
As for password files -- we keep that printed and on flash drive and CDs ONLY. It is never on the hard drive.

I'm going to try to get the old computer to boot up one more time tomorrow so I can copy off the few things I need desperately but I'm not optimistic. I don't know how to turn off the new computer because there is no Shutdown feature. I guess I just turn it off.
Oh and my biggest problem so far is getting MacAfee off of there. Revo Uninstaller got about 3/4 through and then hung up.
BTW does anyone know since I could download my bookmarks from my old computer to my phone can I reverse the direction from the phone to the new computer? It would make my life so much easier.
Posted 8 years ago # -
The McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool should get rid of McAfee. Revo might work if you booted in Safe Mode, McAfee is probably fighting the removal.
Most browsers have a "sync" feature. Here's a link for Firefox: How do I set up Sync on my computer? But, you might be able to email the bookmarks to yourself, download them on the PC, and just import them.

Darn I was just able to boot up the old computer and was able to copy a bunch of files but I completely forgot about Favorites. I copied my old Word program but the new computer won't run it unless I run setup and I don't remember where I got the original program from (I probably copied it off an older computer). I hate the latest versions of Word.
Has anyone ever heard of Office Compatibility Pack 12.0.6514.5001? I found it under col129.mail.live.com/?tid=cmljYK0GO15RGTu2w75adbNg2&fid=flinbox. I don't know if it goes back far enough to the version I like.
Posted 8 years ago # -
You only need the compatibility pack if you need the file formats introduced in Office 2007 (like docx). If you just use the files internally then you don't need it. It covers Office 2000 - Office 2003.
FYI - you might take a gander at UBitMenu. It's a add-on that replaces the ribbon interface in Office 2007 - Office 2016 with the classic interface so you don't waste half your life relearning how to do what you already knew how to do.

Thanks ChrisS. It's not perfect but it's 90% better than it was.

I'm so dumb. I use Open Office for Excel documents and thought there was a Word version on there too but couldn't find anything called Word. Today I decided to click on Text Document and discovered it's a Word clone with the template I'm used to. Now I just have to figure out which version to save since I've been saving to the Office 2016 compatability mode. I'm happy though.
