I am looking for a software that will record all changes a installation does to my computer. It needs to be able to compare before and after and in the event of install tell me what the program left on my system. This needs to be easily understood and intuitive interface.
I know its probably a lot to ask for but it needs to be easily understood by a novice.

I'd also like to hear of such a program. :) There is a freeware program that compares registry entries, but unfortunately I only ever installed it on my main computer which is still offline after the system crash last week so I can't give you the name. Hopefully someone will remember ythe name of it. It was posted in these forums several months ago, but you'd be hard pressed to find it in the mass of posts.

Yse that's the one. It's worth trying as I found it did show changes. you must remember to start it up before you install whatever it is you intend to install, so that it can take a snapshot of the registry first. Thanks Violet for reminding me

Actually, that's one program that could use a Re-run - it's really neat. Scan for differences in Registry, Files and Applications. At the moment they have a holiday price reduction going on.

I've checked out a few of these "system change monitoring" programs lately. I started with VerifyMyPC, which was good in some ways, but too flawed in others. I ended up using FileWatch, which was only $14. It basically records every change your system has undergone since the last "snapshot" you took, which can be a bit much to understand if you aren't fairly knowledgeable. However, if you take one snapshop immediately before installing a program, then do your program install and do another snapshot shortly afterwards, it does a fine job of showing you how the installation affected your system. It has a free trial period, but some of the recording abilities are limited during the trial period (only records the first 10 registry changes).
Just tonight I came across a reference to TotalUninstall, which looks like it might be exactly what you are looking for. Nice interface, well organized. Only bad thing is that it isn't free. It costs either $29.95 or $39.95 depending on which version you want to get. You can check it out at http://www.martau.com/tu.php .
There are a few others that I've run across, but TotalUninstall and FileWatch are the ones that I'm most familiar with.
