Not knowing what version of StarPort's download was the other day and I cannot find it on on their site got me a little couious, so I went surfing and I stumbbled on these web sites: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Network_and_Internet/Misc__Networking_Tools/StarPort.html
and here is another: http://www.programurl.com/starport.htm , I hope these links work. Most interesting I think, especially when StarWind is mentioned with both downloads, one program seems to complement the other. What gives with this? After the reading the write ups, it seems that you need StarWind to have a full functioning StarPort.
Good day,
Barry
Is there something fishy with StarPort?

I don;t get what u mean? Its working for me so what is not working for you? I find the multiple RAMDisk capability pretty handy when the free version only works with 1 disk.

There's a link at the bottom that says "Download StarPort" and it link to "http://www.rocketdivision.com/downloads/starport.exe"
Are you looking for this? Or you were just wondering what version it is? I think StarPort is just a combination of all the other products.

Hello,
Sorry, Alax, I did not go to the download page, so I missed the version number.
Anyway, The StarPort software main function, from my understanding, is to enable the uploading of files from a server or a computer acting as a server, to a remote storage device, using the internet. By providing Grab and Burn, the base computer can rip the files from DVDs, Blue Rays, CDs etc and then upload these types of files too. With StarPort's vertual DVD ROM, it gives the clients on a remote computer a way to veiw these files, if they do not have that type of optical device on their computer. Where Starwind comes in, is if the remote computer does not have a burner, CD or DVD, you can send the files back by the internet and burn the files to a disk on a computer that has one. (Quote "StarWind is currently the only iSCSI Target for Microsoft Windows which allows sharing of physical storage hardware "AS IS"). This I can see would be a huge saving to businesses that have a lot of computers and need to burn a lot of disks, because they would not have to install optical devises in every computer. You got to have both programs to make it all work together, and after the evaluation period is over, the cheapest Starwind version is $395.00 I know there is more features in both programs , but basically they are designed to share tons of files and storage hardware over a network.
If all you want to do is watch DVDs on you home computer, just install a DVD ROM, they are dirt cheap, or better yet if you want to copy movies, a DVD burner, you can get a good one now for less than $100.00, and with the right free software, like Grab and Burn or DVD Decryptor you can copy all the movies you want, without installing a program that most home based computers will never use. If you do not have Windows XP SP2 or better, StarPort will not work anyway.
Thank you GOTD for offering StarPort, I am sure there are folks out there, that will have a use for it.
Good day

Hi Barry,
I am not too sure about the usage, but you could be right that it needs StarWind. Did you try using the iSCSI initiator offered by Microsoft? I am trying to figure out the whole iSCSI tech and still twigling about how the architecture works. If you succeeded with the initiator by MS, please do share. TIA!...would be really nice to use StarPort for what u mentioned.

I think i kidna get what this iSCSI is about..yeah you're right, you need StarWind for the iSCSI target. I found a free one call Win iSCSI Target...but I can't get it to work with MS iSCSI initiator...i will see if it works with StarPort tonight

Hi,
No, I could not get it to work, and after screwing up my internet connection a couple of times, I decided not to play with these progams anymore, I come to the conclusion that I need a lot more technical savy then I have, to put it all together.
Alax, I noticed in the comments for StarPort, comment 110, HJB posted a E-Mail address, to a Microsoft MPV, that should be able to give you assistance for setting up these programs.
I do not need these programs anyway, curiosity got the better of me, and I had to find out for myself what StarPort was all about.
Have a good one,

All of the software on GOTD is custom made. This way, no user can simply just use a gotd key with their main software. Also, the custom made versions show that dialog boxy thing at the installation screen.

Hi MASA,
Instaling the program was not the problem, getting it to do what the program was suppose to do, was. Way to technical for me to set up on my own. Were you able to do it? I thought that it would be the coolest thing would be to, set up files on one computer, and be able to burn them on another over a network.
I am not sure by what you mean "the software is custom made", do you mean the download manager, the key generator, or the give away download that GOTD is offering?
Thanks again GOTD, keep up the good work.
Good day,
