Q: How is a Moderator like a flawed antimalware program?
A: When s/he throws the baby out with the bathwater.

GASP, seems a thread was yanked. Initially launched by a respected member (certainly not me!), it informed visitors of TrendMicro's limited time 3-year offer, but also drew some cogent comments and links/reviews of an alternate free option called Comodo. Google cached the early posts here, but not yesterday's posts, so thanks a bunch to whomever did the deed.

Anywho, here's the links to Comodo's free product suite (firewall, av, anti-malware) as well as a detailed review that IMHO is worth a read even by those who are happy with their current apps. It justifies my preference for mixing and matching components rather than one-stop suite shopping. Let's see if these links stay visible for more than 24-hours.

FWIW, another respected member (who has since moved on to greener pastures, paid positions or that great forum in the sky) posted this list of free anti-v apps long long ago in a galaxy far far away.

Hello RunesageMagik,

Thank you very much for reanimating this topic; I was about to protect my ageing XP SP2 system with the ZoneAlarm Pro 2009 offering mentioned in another forum here.
However, Matousec.com rates the Firewall element of this suite highly, so it looks like I will be availing myself of this software instead, in order to shore up my Firewall security.

Btw, in your post above you mention that the Comodo suite also includes an anti-malware component. When reading a description of this suite on the Comodo website I couldn't find mention of it. Would you mind posting a link to a description of the anti-malware program, as I'm curious about it. Many thanks in advance.

I can't understand why this seemingly innocuous thread was "yanked"; do you know why - or are you able to speculate on - why this occurred?

Also, thank you for your unique brand of prose which I always find very entertaining and informative.

Hello, ornithos, good to know my warped sense of humor doesn't ruffle a birdwatcher's feathers.

If you scroll down the lengthy list of free apps on Comodo's homepage, you'll come across their highly rated BOClean 4.27. Not surprisingly, it's oft mistaken for an anti-perspirant.

FWIW, you can run their free Online AV Scanner, a good idea for everyone to do periodically. I use several different online scanners, just for the heck of it. Redundancy isn't just good for spacecraft and rock climbers.

I also like this free antimalware product, and not just for its pun-ny name!

Hello again, RunesageMagik,

Having read your original post again I now understand why I got the wrong end of the stick here; I thought you were referring to Comodo's free Internet Security/Firewall suite as having an anti-malware component. I now realise that the BOClean product is actually a separate product. As I'm already using A2 (from a previous Giveaway) I'll now be installing Comodo. I was concerned about installing Comodo with an included anti-malware component as I didn't want to end up with it conflicting with A2.
Thanks for the clarification.

That said, I agree with your views on redundancy; I believe that security overkill is not a contradiction in terms. I'll be following up your link to Malwarebytes.

Remember that a warped sense of humour is second nature to many Brits, so please keep up the good work!

ornithos, I've been writing tongue-in-cheek material for so long, my portrait's frequently on the cover of Chipmunk Fanzine.
Don't know where the editors found it, but in a recent article on "gnawing edge" humor, they posted my baby picture.

Having read the TrendMicro thread last week, my speculation on why it was pulled has to do with its reference to the offer being intended only for certain TrendMicro customers and so as a result, I suspect TrendMicro prevailed on GAOTD to pull the material that could result in unintended people getting a free ride for more than usual trial periods.

Talking of Trend Micro's suite, mine was cut off, even though it recorded on the front page as being registered until 2011. I was taken to their web page and told to buy the product. Has that happened to anyone else? I have had problems with it anyway, to me it was not worth buying. So, now I'm going for Comodo, I've used their firewall forever, and love it, and look forward to trying their anti virus program. Oh, and its' free, although I have no objections to purchasing stuff I like (like Evernote, the Snowy the Bear games, etc.)

Runesage, I have to add my voice to Ornithos, I too, love your sense of humour, and always read your threads, even if the subject doesn't interest me (shooting and racing games). There are a few names I always look for when I open the Forums and yours is one of them. I can remember laughing myself silly over your "I don't need no stinkin' instructions" story!

I'm thinking the Comodo firewall sounds pretty good. I finally got enough courage to take the Returnil plunge and found it was very easy to set up and use. I'm glad I dl'ed it and registered, I wish I had actually used it sooner as it is super. I can be such a dork!!
I've found that not only is it good for trying new software without leaving kibbles and bits in your registry, I've been able to see what is trying to write to my hard drive.
Most of it is ok, but there are a few things I'm glad can't get through anymore.

It was good to see your handsome visage mounted on the cover of Chipmunk Fanzine. Given a chipmunk's capacious cheeks, I believe it explains your propensity for tongue-in-cheek humour :<) Great pictures, by the way, especially the babyshot.

I'm sure it also explains why you are so "gnaw"ledgeable about various matters (sorry, couldn't resist the pun; in the UK we do so enjoy poor puns, as our tabloid newspapers are testament to).
