I downloaded Fort Defense, which is the GOTD. After d/l I clicked on setup.exe as I always do & I got the 'successfully activated' popup but I can't locate the game anywhere on my computer. Search turns up nothing but the original d/l folder & the only files in there are Readme.txt, Setup.exe & Setup.gcd. Does it rename to something else during the extraction?

For me it ran similar to the more usual WinRAR self extractor, unpacking the game files into C:\Program Files\FortDefense\ . The installer window listed the files as they unpacked, & when it was done I had to click the "Close" button to close the window, & then the GOTD message window popped up.

I've had an awful time with getting any of the games to even install as of a few weeks ago. I can extract the zip and then it'll go through the initial stages of trying to install and always gives a 'setup.exe has stopped working' but yet the final popup saying it was activated shows but no game in where it'd usually install like in the past. Only thing that changed was that my WinRar stopped working and actually demanded money instead of being able to just click out of it, so I had to uninstall it and start using other progs to try and open these things.

I'd suggest looking at a few things:
- check Event Viewer. Generally the wrapper prevents you seeing any errors but if you got the "setup has stopped working" then maybe there's more information available.
- try right-clicking and selecting "run as administrator"; setup might be trying to write to parts of your disk that your account isn't allowed to access
- the installation process is fairly machine intensive, make sure you've closed any programs that don't need to be running; you might also try temporarily disabling the anti-virusIt could also be your choice of a zip program isn't working all that well. You might try 7-Zip or ZipGenius if you're using another program.

Event viewer shows APPCRASH as the violation but the info provided doesn't give enough specifics for me to see what the holdup is. I think I'd been using 7Zip as my replacement, but I'll disable the virus stuff and try again. I'd also tried as administrator a few hours ago with the same results.
*edit... disabling AVG has allowed it to proceed finally. Never gave me issue before, and I missed out on a few intriguing games as a result of it. Dammit.

Since AVG is at least a contributing factor you might consider uninstalling it, running the AVG removal tool, and reinstalling it. It could be that a program update isn't sitting well with your system and a fresh install might fix the problem. If you installed AVG after using another product then you should also run the removal tool for that product if you haven't already done so.
Alternatively, you could set an exclusion for the GCD file, which would tell AVG to ignore it.

Not sure where my cursor went to so I can play the game. I downloaded game then when I opened it the cursor was not visible. When I was able to gravitate over the options button and click it I was given two options: Windows screen or Full screen. The Full screen button looks like it is locked in place so I clicked the Windows screen and got this message: screen resolution is too low for the window mode. I tried to click on the full screen but it will not move/highlight that I am on it. I did try to play the first round so I could see if it was something I could fix once game started but it gave me the same screen for window or full screen mode. How do I get the cursor to work? I have downloaded the game 3 times to finally be able to get to this point and I am starting to get frustrated in having to find the cursor to play. This has happened for the last 4 game giveaways but never before this in the years that I have been visiting this site. Any suggestions on how I can play this game?

Using "pointer trails" causes problems with a lot of games for some reason. Look in Control Panel | Mouse | Pointer Options and see if the "Display Pointer Trails" is checked. If so, uncheck it and try the game again.
If that doesn't help, right-click on the icon, click the compatibility tab and:
(a) check disable visual themes then try the game
(b) if no joy, check disable display scaling on high DPI settings, try the game
(c) still no joy, run the game in compatibility mode (try Win 7 and XP SP3)Posted 9 years ago #
