I've not used I.E. for over a year for a similar problem. When I.E. was opened about 20 pages would open. I now use Firefox and sometimes Google Chrome. started to lose interest in I.E. (which I used to swear I'd never leave) after they introduced Bing.

The multiple-tab problem is usually caused by either malware or an improperly functioning add-on.
Rule out the malware first. Run a full anti-virus scan of your PC (run a boot time scan if available). Next, download and install Malwarebytes, SUPERAntispyware and AdwCleaner (you can get them from MajorGeeks Top Freeware Picks). Run each of the downloaded programs, let them update definition files as needed.
Test IE to see if the problem is resolved.
If not, start IE, click Tools | Manage add-ons | Enable or disable add-ons and see what add-ons are currently loaded and enabled. Make a note of any that you know you need/want.
You can then either disable all add-ons, restart IE and if it works re-enable the add-ons one at a time until you find the problem.
Or, you can click Tools | Internet Options, select the Advanced Tab and click Reset at the bottom under "Reset Internet Explorer Settings" which will delete all add-ons and give you back the new browser smell. You can then add back any add-on that you noted as needed above. (My preferred option because it's quicker.)
When you get it working again, do what Stephen suggested... use another browser. Your version of IE isn't very secure and you can't run the newer more secure version. There's nothing wrong with using it for casual browsing but it's not really a good choice for banking or online purchases.
