Has anybody been able to run these two games (FreeGamePick / ToomkyGames)

For ToomkyGames, a new game was listed this evening - "Chronicles of the Witches and Warlocks". I can download and install it but when I try to run it, I get the a dump with the message: Unhandled exception at 0xxxxx0022E381C. Exception code 0xC0000005.

I'm running Windows 7 (still and for a while). I've tried to disable the high DPI scaling, admin mode and a variety of compatibility modes -- all with no success.

For FreeGamePick, a new game - "Hidden - On the Trail of the Ancients" was listed last night. Every time I try to download it (using either FireFox or Internet Explorer), it tells me it's connected and to wait 19 seconds to start the download. Then there's a countdown and when it hit's zero is says it cannot connect to the server and to try later. I've been trying off and on since last night!

In both cases, I contacted the site but have heard nothing. For ToomkyGames, I just sent it a few minutes ago and it is a Friday night.

Has anybody been able to successfully download/install/run either of these games?

A friend tried the ToomkyGames one on Vista with a similar error. No luck at all! I'll try my 8.1 laptop tomorrow with a fresh download. Maybe they'll fix it by then.

Hi Diane,

I've just tried downloading "Chronicles of Witches and Warlocks" from Toomky Games and although it's dowloaded fine, I can't get it to run. I've tried the shortcut that it sets up, and both the .exe files in the actual document, but both simply give me a black screen that just sits there and does nothing.

I'm running Windows 7 64 Home and this is the first time I've had a problem from Toomky.

My guess is like yours; it's probably a video problem.

You've already done the normal stuff. I did find a mention that the game has a minimum resolution of 1024x768 so you might try setting your display at that resolution before launching the game (with the default text size) and see what happens. If that works, try a higher video setting with the default text. It could be that the shortcut options don't work and you need to manually set the video mode.

Otherwise, it looks like a newish game so maybe updating the video card driver or, if you updated recently, rolling back to the prior driver.

I haven't touched my video driver in ages and the last check said it was the latest and greatest.

I tried this on my Windows 8.1 laptop as well. It had the same result -- black screen and then the error message. It was a different address but the same code. In that case, I tried it with both the <gamename>.exe and the game.exe.

I don't think it's the game itself. It's not getting that far. The firs thing you should see is the ToomkyGames splash screen. It's not showing that. It's failing before that is displayed. It's something in the build. I hope they see this post OR my email but it being the weekend, probably won't find out until next week about a possible fix.

A black screen means that the game is unable to negotiate a compatible resolution with your PC. If it were just one PC then it's probably something to do with the drivers; since it's on at least two different PCs then it's most likely a problem that ToomkyGames created when they compiled their version of the game (they may have messed up their wrapper).

After using Universal Extractor to get just the game files themselves, to eliminate the installation routine as potential cause, had the same experience with Chronicles of the Witches and Warlocks in 7, but when I tried it in the XP Mode VM, got an error message that it couldn't find DX 8 files.

It sounds like it's happening to at least 5 machines. Two for me, one for my friend (using Vista), Littlemaggit's and mickiem's machines. That's at least 3 versions of Windows, too. There are at least 2 Windows 7, HP 64 bit involved.

Talk about a messed up wrapper!

I hope they get it sorted - I know they look in to this forum. By the way, I'm getting the same problem with accessing Toomky's website that others have had. When I finished one of their games it goes to the website (no worries there as they have to advertise), but I get an error message that suggests the site isn't available or there's a problem with the address. This is presumably Toomkygames.com. However, if I go to the address that I've got on my bookmarks - Toomkygames.com/en - it works fine.

I hope the people see these messages as it's such a good source of games.

I had the same thing when I tried to install the game on my laptop this morning - site not available. However, it worked OK last night when I tried it on my desktop. I think the site's servers are a bit flakey!

That's odd. DirectX 8 is Windows 98/ME, Windows XP SP3 is DirectX 9 (even a base install of SP2 is DirectX 9), Vista is DirectX 10, and Windows 7 SP1 is DirectX 11. A check of "Is at least DirectX 8 installed?" should pass on any system built in the last 15 years.

There's obviously something a bit off but maybe it does suggest some of it is a resolution problem after all. I don't normally run my VMs at a resolution of 1920x1080 because it's easy to get confused as to which computer you're using. If Mikiem is running his XP VM below HD resolution then he's at least getting an error message.

So maybe pretend it's a dismal New Years Day and set a low resolution? Forget about aiming for the stars and aim for a mole hill?

I got an answer this morning from ToomkyGames. They are aware of the issue and are working to fix it. They've also contacted the developer. They'll let me know when it's fixed.

Just to note -- I did some googling and found it's not that old of a game. It was first offered at BigFishGames in April of last year. It's requirements list: XP/Win7/Win8 (no Vista?) and Directx 9.0

That's better and faster response than from FreeGamePick on their issue (reported at least 24 hours before). I haven't heard from them and the last contact with them went totally unanswered. I'm about to drop them from my "Freebie Circuit" as they are unreliable and their push seems to be almost entirely online or android. I'm disappointed in them.

I noticed yesterday that that one game "Chronicles of Witches and Warlocks" was gone.

Today (Aug. 29) I got an email stating that there is a problem with the game itself and they have contacted the developer. While they wait for a reply and fix, they have removed the game to prevent more confusion.

That matches what I notices. I appreciate them keeping us in mind and removing problem games until they are fixed. Fewer angry, upset and confused users.

Kudos to Toomky Games for keeping us in the loop as regards a problem with one of their games. That's the way (or should be) that similar sites ought to behave with regard to their end-users. I know that I've got Toomky Games as one of my Bookmarks now, and it's replaced another game site that isn't the same as it used to be.

Littlemaggit, that sounds like either Jenkat or FreeGamePick. I have removed both sites from my freebie circuit. Not it includes MyPlayCity, MyRealGames, GameTop and ToomkyGames.

I heard from ToomkyGames this morning. Chronicles of the Witches and Warlocks is now available and it now plays correctly. You may have to scroll down a little on that freebie main page but it is there. It's an 8Floor game and I found that surprising. I've got a lot of games form them (mainly griddler, jigsaw, and solitaire) and this is the first time any of them has given me any problem other than not letting me use caps in my player name.

Now everything is fine. I've not seen any other problem with them since they responded to my initial complaint of a tricky install by cleaning up that install. Now they are one of my most preferred freebie game sites. No stubs, choice of where to install, no extra software, and an easy procedure to circumvent browser opening (rename the shortcut's target program).

Thanks, Dragonlair. I'll give it another go as it got good reviews (and is my type of game).

You've got the same sites on your circuit as I have, and I agree that Toomky's installer is very user-friendly.

Freegamepick? Whenever I try to get anything from them I'm greeted with, "Error connecting to the server, this download is not available for your location."

This is as unacceptable as youtube's constant, "we're sorry, this video is not available in your country".

I **think** it may be that the game's unavailable, e.g. the title Dragonlair was originally after, "Hidden - On the Trail of the Ancients", gives me the same error message, while Pioneer Lands downloaded just fine.

I never did get an answer from my email. That was the second time in a row that they have failed to respond in any way at all! I was totally ignored both times.

With their attitude and the experience that the EXACT SAME install program can produce totally different results based on time, I have removed them from my list of acceptable sites for free games. I do not consider them a valid site to use anymore!
