TeslaCrypt 1st made the news because it targeted gamers, but it was/is in active development, & the latest version is worse. One difference that was noted is that it hunts down connected drives or storage, even if they haven't been mounted to have a drive letter in Windows. Normally such drives would only show up in partitioning software.
One potential effect I can see is that Windows recovery &/or backup images &/or manufacturer restore images can all reside in hidden partitions on your hard drive(s), & if TeslaCrypt encrypts those, that closes the door on using that stuff to recover a working Windows system.
