When I submit a comment on the day's software, there is nowhere to select thumbs up or thumbs down. Just a text box.
So how is the rating determined? Plainly most people do not have this problem, because the ratings are displayed for each gotd offering.
I use Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.9 . What am I missing? What happens to the ratings from commenters who do not select any particular rating?

I'm sure they just give it a rating based upon the general "feel" of what we write - It would be better to have the 5-star system which most reviews now seem to use. A better question is - where do they get the initial 5-10 ratings they open up with? That's a head-scratcher!

"VJ" - Move your cursor over the selected icon (Thumbs-up or down) and click. - If you click "thumbs-down" a small dialoge box will open, asking "why?"...

Hi lwbjag. Yes, selecting thumbs up or down works. But in Firefox, the 'submit' option is unavailable. Thus I can only submit comments in the text box at the bottom of the comments section, which uses the default rating (thumbs up).
I am strongly tempted to believe that the GOTD rating system is very flawed because anyone entering their comment after reading previous posts - ie in the comment box at the end of all the other posts of the day - will automatically be a thumbs up, whatever browser they use.
Logically, then, those who read the comments and post at the end will rate thumbs up by default. While those who post without thought ("wow gaotd I think you're wonderful" and "first to post", etc) are more likely to use the thumbs system.
At least one GOTD commenter said I shouln't use firefox because it is no good. I do not accept that as an appropriate answer to this problem.
GOTD please advise if you are aware of/intend to address this problem.Posted 17 years ago # -
Well let's see if I have this correct VJ. All other browsers work with this (i.e. Maxthon, Opera, IE, etc), but FireFox doesn't. That tells us that FF either doesn't support this feature or has a bug.
So instead of asking tens of thousands of webpages to fix this, wouldn't it be better to tell the FF people to fix this? If people don't complain to the FF people, FF will never get better and websites have to dumb down just to be FF compatible. Just my 2¢.

I am running Firefox 2.0.0.2. When I post a comment on the days software - the tally for thumbs up or down does not change (I just posted to verify this).
However, I am then able to click on one of the two thumbs to rate the software and provide a reason if asked. This is as I would expect.
From the description provided - it sounds to me that you are running FireFox with the NoScript addon installed http://noscript.net/ - and you have not allowed scripting for giveawayoftheday.com
Once you turn on scripting for this site, functions such as the voting/rating of software titles will work just fine.
However, the entire Thumbs Up/Down rating is unclear. Does "Thumbs Up" mean
- It is good software
- It does what it claims
- I like the software
- I have a use for the software
- I could activate the software without assistancelikewise - a "Thumbs Down" rating can have very different meanings and severity.
- My Computer exploded, and I have to install XP again because of this program.
- I don't understand the program
- I don't like the program
- I have no use for the program
- The program is a sham and does not do what it claims
- I still can't find the activate.exe program everyone is talking aboutSo when you see 50 Thumbs up, and 10 Thumbs down it is not clear if that actually means anything. Also there is no requirement to actually vote/rate the program. Maybe it should have 500 Thumbs up instead of 50, but people were so excited at getting it to run they forgot to vote - and the 10 who didn't like the program currently offer competing products and are trying to bash the opposition. Who would know?
As a researcher once said 50% of survey participants account for half of the responses, and 46% of all statistics are made up.

Oh okay BuBBy, thanks! That makes perfect sense. Kudos!

Absolutely agree, BuBBy; I'm copying my comment (on Bubble Bobble World) over here since I figure nobody will get to read it over there, since I posted so late (Yes Bill, I finally got the copy and paste down - thanks for the patience and help):
I truly don’t understand how your thumbs-up - thumbs-down rating system works. This is the first time I have tried to click on the thumbs, since finding out yesterday that that is how you calculated our responses. Silly me, I thought you read each comment and gave it an up or down based upon the gist of what we wrote. Now, after visiting the forums yesterday, I know that we are supposed to click on the thumb-of-choice to register our feelings - so I tried. I really tried! For the first time, I have found the game to be incomprehensibly stupid, the controls impossible to maneuver, the graphics insulting to even a five-year-old and the music gratingly annoying - but back to that in a minute - So I centered my arrow over the down-thumb and mouse-clicked it … and nothing happened - so I tried again, and again, and again (yes, it was so bad, I felt even if all my votes counted, it was the truth). But none of my votes apparently counted. So, to see if the system was working, I centered my mouse over the up-thumb and clicked … WHAMMO! Up six points and surprisingly, up two on the thumb-for-down! I guess that told me! So if you think your counter is anywhere near accurate - think again … I am going back to see if I can right the wrong, but wanted to say just a word about the game… Although the screen is like a nightmare clone of Snowy, the chicken (is that what it is?) can fly straight through levels, whether there is an opening or not, and then it chases bananas, fades out and shimmers, if something bad happens to it and seems to cry at the slightest provocation. Then when you are totally frustrated because your control seem to control practically nothing, a big threat floats down, urging you to “Hurry Up!” and then slam, before you can do a thing about it - you are told you are a complete loser, responsible for multiple deaths. If I had a kid - it would never get near this game! Now, I’m new to gaming, yours being the only ones on this computer, but with the likes of Snowy, Bubble Xmas, and the remarkable Butterfly Escape, I can’t imagine why anyone would take this monstrosity, even for free! So, when you go to tally your thumbs for the day - please add a down for me. But for the GOTD and GGAOTD teams - a huge two thumbs up!!
So much for my experience with the thumbs!!
