   if you don't need a GUI, or don't have XP/Vista, CGSecurity’s PhotoRec is right impressive, and free too.

   the current list of file formats recovered by PhotoRec contains more than 180 file extensions (about 100 file families).

   I don't have any problems using the arrow keys, enter, and y/n- for the added recovery options and less hassle for the slooow video on this laptop, it's fine. takes a while to scan a couple of gigs of memory card, so it's going in the background anyway...
