What's the status? It has been close to four days since the discovery that BurnAware is not honoring its Home Edition commitment of free updates for a year. This is contrary with what it states in the Help & Support section. So, can or can't we update BurnAware Home Edition? Have they reneged on the deal with GAOTD? Has anyone in the GAOTD project team even tried to contact GloryLogic? What's up?

nothing on the gaotd download page when it was given away indicated any upgrade commitment- only the 'comparison' price even vaguely suggested anything of the kind, and the 'no updates' condition was present.
I save the wording of the offers and the comments, and that's what I found when I checked my burned-to-dvd files.
unless explicitly specified, (or from very rare, overly generous vendors) the update facilities and wording in the program and help are trumped by "2. No free upgrades to future versions"- and it was a only a wild speculation (and a complaint at that) in a comment by a visitor that suggested there would be any updates at all.
if somebody official jumps in and says I'm wrong, then I'm wrong- but unless that happens I'd say there aren't grounds for claiming an update that was never offered in the first place.
they aren't likely to rewrite the program's license display wording when they give it away when the giveaway page and the readme.txt both state no free upgrades to future versions in plain english.

When I emailed them, I got this reply from "tech support"
There are no updates for GAOTD license.

Hi goodgotd - I don't think you and I are refering to the same thing so please bear with me. Open BurnAware and "click" on Help and Support, then "click" on the "About" for the License information. That's where it says:
Single User License
1 Year Free Upgrades"Posted 16 years ago # -
yep, got that.
what I'm trying to say is that's the standard minimum license wording embedded in the program, but like the booby-trapped 'check for update' in most programs given away, it doesn't apply and means nothing because the giveaway terms did not include upgrades at all.
at least it told you up front when you tried that the more-limited license that was supplied for gaotd to supply to it's users wasn't good for upgrades, instead of being like most- going ahead and installing the new version and then chortling over now being a limited trial, too bad, sucker. I'd call that right nice, myself. well above average.
that progran only had 3 wording options- unlicensed demo (that would have caused a fuss, right?), and licensed 1 year or lifetime. (ok, there are probably corporate and multiuser strings too- but they're all hard-coded at compile time.)
so it displays the lowest level single user string even though the license code was a single-version one-time key. as was stated at the time it was given away.
that's what I meant about them not recoding and recompiling the program for giveaway because that was too much effort and man-hours and would risk adding bugs.
which is why the $@#^^$^$ 'check for updates automatically' land-mine checkbox and 'check for updates' gotcha-sucker menu item stays in the vast majority of programs, and so we have people posting plaintively about updating- and suddenly it's back to demo.
same thing. the giveaway page and readme.txt say no updates, that's the rule.
the only part that applies is "Single User License".

I have to agree with goodgotd on this one. I do think the one year free upgrades that's quoted in the help and support is one that's been embedded.
We all know that giveaways come with a no support or upgrades policy; though as someone else has already pointed out, some developers such as Oleg the guy who created Magic Farm as well as some applications developers, have been kind enought to give use upgrades. Some developers may even be ameniable to giving you upgrades or even personal unlock codes if you asked. I've received stuff from several developers after emailing them about products I've received free here at the giveaway project.

Perhaps you're right about that. I understand what's being said regarding embedding, it's just that in other programs where updates were negotiated it would show up in that programs "About's". It’s how we verify that the programs we get from GAOTD are indeed fully licensed. For example the recently GAOTD “A-Square Anti-Malware” in the “About” for that program is the license information and the particulars of a year of free updates. So all of this still doesn't quite sit right and I'd feel better about it if someone from the GAOTD team could clear that up. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to ask, except I don’t know exactly how to go about contacting the right GAOTD person so any advice there would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you want to go that route, PM BuBBy, Lee, or Admin- go to your profile, click "You have no new messages", then "new PM". it's fairly self-explanatory from there.
I will point out (one last time) the difference between burnaware and a-squared. BA is self-contained, while a-squared is reporting the status of your account you created on their remote servers.
way different. but that's the last I'll post on the subject- I can't think of any way to make the difference clearer.
Cheers, 30.

Thanks for your feedback goodgotd, I sincerely appreciate it. I was thinking the other day how beneficial it would be if there were easier ways to post screen shots. You and I could banter back and forth until we're both blue in the face and still never be certain that there's a clear understanding of the issues. There are people posting now that may be getting frustrated because they have problems that others don't, and yet when you reply by asking "well did you try doing this" they'll reply "Oh yea I tried that" then ultimately discover that they only thought they did. There's no better substitute than a picture highlighting the problem. In this case I could capture the window with TNT (the finest screen capture tool period, with no if, and, or buts about it) and add a bubble comment. In the past I've been to do just that then upload to Wiki Send, but the other day Wiki gave me problems. When it comes to PC's there's always something that causes problems. Don't you just love it, can't live with them, and can't live them! (I heard that said once by Al Bundy on the show “Married With Children”)

aRenegade: Re: can't live with them, and can't live without them.. the same can be said for husbands and wives! *-)

Ahh but Copmom, me thinks you've misread that for it's "Can't Live With Them and Can't Live With Them!" So do you think now, that the same can be said about husbands and wives?
- I know, it's a profound question :)(

personally I use faststone 5.3 and picattic.com; so far the only limitation I've found with picattic is with long file names, over about 25 characters or so- other than that, no hassle- look in the 'what is it' and 'warning: do not read' threads for examples.

ARenegade, I didn't misread what you actually wrote, I thought I was correcting it! LOL
And yes, that is profound! Too early for "profound" for me right now!Posted 16 years ago # -
Good Work goodgotd! You win top honors from me today with your picattic.com referal. Ok, there will be no more doubt what-so-ever in my mind (what's left of it) that I'm making myself understood with this topic that I'm seeking closure with. This is the link to my picattic.com upload. The artwork is courtesy of TNT Screen Capture which as it so happens is my favorite all time number one GAOTD (I'm not a very good artist but with TNT you don't have to be). This is the link to check it out:
