Another case where I wanted to ask this in the Windows Community.
I was trying to transition an old game to my Windows 8.1 laptop last night. It was a copy of the game folder -- no registry or shortcuts involved.
I clicked on the main executable and it sorta came up. I had audio but no video at first. I was trying to shut the game down as not working when the video kicked in and the game worked fine from there. I played a bit and then backed out. As I backed out, I got a message from Windows 8.1 that there was a problem and it put in some compatibility fix.
I checked the properties and nothing was set. I went back into the game partly because of the message and partly because of the initial video problem. All I can get now is a low resolution version of whatever is on the screen and no game and it seems to be hung. I can't shut down the game although it's tagged as "not responding". The only way to get out of the hang and get my screen back to normal is to sign out and then back on.
I've tried running the compatibility troubleshooter and it insists to run in compatibility mode for Windows 7. I can't get anywhere. It ALMOST worked the first time. I think it might work right if I can get it back to that mode but Windows has something set that won't let me.
Does anybody know enough about Windows 8/8.1 to tell me how to clear whatever it set about this game?
