I think a lot of people would feel that they would like some level of control or predictability in what is "coming up".
I am thinking about the idea where a giveaway could be "voted for". Perhaps during the week people can register and vote (once per account) for a program from a list of maybe 5 or 6 alternatives provided by GOTD. The program that wins is released as a giveaway on a pre-arranged date at the end of the vote as the regular daily giveaway.
Now the benefit of this would be twofold - firstly people would have some say in what is offered and what is not - GOTD will get an idea of what most people like and what the members think sucks. This could be a guide for future offerings. Also people can visit the websites of the developers to read about the programs that can be voted for - maybe download a demo and try them out before they vote. hmmm - the software companies would just love lots of people visiting their site to try out their programs so they can vote for a giveaway.
Secondly as only people who register an account to vote - will also be registered to participate in the forum discussions and hopefully continue to build the GOTD community. People will hopefully discuss the merits (or otherwise) of the programs on offer for those who haven't voted yet.
This would introduce a new aspect to GOTD giving people the opportunity to vote for giveaways, and after voting they can follow the vote tally until the end. If this was offered every few days between normal giveaways, site members would feel that they had a little more say in what can be downloaded.
Tell me I'm wrong... and GOTD is just about clicking on a giveaway link once a day - and then coming back 24 hours later to do the same again.
