I would really like to see some good e-books as a giveaway. I mean, one can have and use only so much software or games. Maybe we can diversify or add with all kinds of things? I wonder what other people would like to see given away besides games and programs?
I would like some stories, adventures, detectives, etc. Maybe also instructive things like "how to" books and programs. educational stuff, maybe even scientific stuff. I bet you lot can think of lots more categories. Comments please?

Or you can check out http://www.lookforbook.com .
Here you can find *ANY* ebook and for everything.
If the ebook is given here (over GAOTD), how do you think they could protect it?
Most of them are in PDF, DJVU or DOC format. How to protect it from copying and emailing?Posted 17 years ago # -

WoW! thank you ALL for the information on e-books. My e-book library consists of Old Time Radio Shows (which I love) and subliminal healing/reiki/hypnosis. I can hardly wait to try out all of the links you folks have posted.
I will also pass the info on the the Veterans Hospitals. There are so many housebound vets that try to find ways to stay connected and participating in society; the e-books and games for the visually impaired (posted by BuBBy) will be welcome additions to the healing arsenals being developed for our vets.
A spiffy Navy salute to all who posted links for these e-books: Luna1, Stamba, WeAreWatching, SillyShaley and Aftabkashif; another for Freebird for making the suggestion!

Thanks Lady Gray.
Look like quite an interesting E-Book.
In the first day of it’s release as a free eBook, the Windows 7 Power Users Guide has received more than half a million hits!
So no use in hammering the website if the link is temporarily unavailable and maybe try downloading at another time.
Also, being a 24 MB PDF file (and depending on your antivirus settings) it'll take a while to appear in your browser once you've clicked the link.

try and beat this:
Forget not the Baen Ftee Librry
Or forget that Baen's Webscriptions eBookstore in addition to giving free access to disabled Ebook readers [through http://www.readassist.org ] is the only Ebook seller that makes all titles ready for download in *ALL* e-reader formats available at the time [like. download all of them if you wish- I do] *without DRM* [Digital rights management] of ANY kind. [ok, no PDF or TXT- but who needs 'em?]
loans/sharing doesn't bother them a bit. Since 1999.
my wife's Kindle has not paid a penny to the Kindle store at Amazon, and probably never will.
In fact every so often the first 2000 copies of a hardback book will have A CD bound in, and they encourage sharing for free. if you want a head ctart for free go to Oberon's Baen CD page over at thefifthimperium.com and download the lot. he even links to BitTorrent files so you don't have to do it all in one go. All legal and sanctioned.
and more publishers keep joining up. the list now stands at:
Ace Trade
Baen Books
Bantam Spectra
Del Rey
E-Reads
Ford Street Publishing
Gallery
Night Shade Books
SRM Publisher
Yard Dog Press
Tor Booksand they just made the first price increase since starting. 3 buks.
basic info:
What is WebScriptions?
A web-based ebook serialization of the fiction and nonfiction published by Baen Books. Each book will be published in three segments, one month apart, beginning three months before the paper book publication date. Each month at least 4 new-to-Webscriptions titles will be available. The intent is to use all frontlist titles for that month. If fewer than four books are published, or if one or more of them is unavailable, titles from the backlist will be used.
What do I get?For each month purchased, you will receive internet access to a directory containing four books.
• Three months before publication subscribers receive the first half of all 4 books.
• Two months before publication subscribers receive the third quarter of all 4 books.
• One months before publication subscribers receive the last quarter, completing all 4 books.
And about two weeks after the last quarter is delivered, bookstores around the country will begin to stock these titles.
WebScriptions does not require subscribers to purchase every month offered. Purchase of an individual month will deliver that month's complete books whether other months are purchased or not.
Consult the publication schedule for exact titles and authors.
When do I get it?We will aim to release each new offering by the 20th of the month.. The final (quarter) segment of each novel should be available approximately two weeks before the book reaches US stores.
What format do I get it in?The chapters will be available as HTML through our password protected site. Examples are currently available in the Baen Free Library. This format should print without difficulty from your web browser, and can be saved and opened using your word processor.
When the Final release of a month is made it will include Mobi/Kindle/Palm, EPUB/Nook/Stanza, Sony LRF, Rocketbook, RTF and Microsoft Reader versions. There won't be any partial version in these formats.
A ZIP file of the various versions will be available for download.
No other formats are planned. To read while offline, follow these directions
But what about PDF?
These formats have been extensively considered for WebScriptions. However, Baen Books does not currently plan to support them. If you would like to discuss these decisions, please visit Baen's Bar.
What does it cost? What if I quit?$18 USD per month (staring April 2011). This payment will entitle you the entirety of all books begun in that month.
How can I pay?WebScriptions will accept payment by Master Card, Visa, Discover or American Express through our secure order form. You can download almost immediately after the transaction.
PayPal is now supported. For those wanting to use echecks or electronic transfers use this option. PayPal may delay clearing the transaction immediately so you might have to wait a few days while they verify the transaction.
Payments by Certified Check or Money Order in US dollars will also be accepted.
No personal or foreign currency checks are accepted.
When can I start?WebScriptions is planned to begin service on Sept 9th, 1999. Please check back for more details. (Took us until the 11th, but all is working now!)
What if I want to read offline?Download the ZIP file and read it in your favorite Browser. If you prefer online, in theory you could try this, if it worked & you used IE Add Favorites & Make Available Offline. Important, set (with Customize) Add Favorites to save 1 link deep (so that it will save all of the chapters). Then you will be able to read it through IE without logging in again. You should be able to auto-download new chapters using the synchronize feature in IE.
The files created should be viewable in Word. However, we aren't making any promises.
These files will view poorly in WordPad, since it won't translate the html.
Where do I go to get it?Got to the login page at http://www.WebScription.net/ If it's your first time, use the Registration button to setup your Subscriber ID and Password. Registration is Free and you may read books in the Baen Free Library for many examples.
Once you can login, you'll find order forms and other information on Accessing your WebScription.
Individual BooksYou can also purchase individual books. Just click the "Individual Books" tab on the Order Form. Single books from currently serialized WebScription bundles will only be available in HTML format until the final version is released. Singles books from previous WebScriptions will be complete and in all the available formats.
What is an ARC?An ARC is an Advance Reader Copy. This is an unproofed manuscript and is guaranteed to be full of typos and error. It is pretty much raw from the authors word processor. But you get the entire ARC well in advance of even the WebScription release.
The price for ARCs is $15.00.
ARCs do not include the final proofed version. For the final version you would have to buy the single or monthly bundle for that book.
Disclaimer:
The initial segments of the books will typically be un-proofed copy similar to galley copies. That's what we are doing during those three months, proofing and passing copies back and forth for approvals. Please don't send us long lists corrections.

There's alot of ebooks at Smashwords, but most of them are not free. However, there are quite a bit that are and available in many different formats. The ebooks found here are mostly independent authors trying to get their work out there. Simply choose what genre you're looking for and then click free ebooks under the filter by option and you're all set.

one warning up front: 1he $114 Kindle IMHO is a bad deal- it adds 'Sponsored Screensavers' and other ads for the lowered price.
also, Auto Kindle eBook Converter 0.4.50 may have a wider range of input formats, but from the comments, Mobipocket eBook Creator 4.2 is a lot less annoying.
another converter-reader to watch is Calibre. Open source, up to v0.8.1, available for Windows XP, Vista and 7, OS X Intel, and many Linux distros. has a fair number of plugins.
Smashwords is the strangest book site I've ever seen, wizzard. an extremely wide range of subjects including bdsm and gay (a prude filter? never thought I'd see something like that!) as well as a lot of short stories under 3000 words, plus books in non-English languages [shows how unlettered an American I am, huh?]- and HTML format books are 'read online' only.
However, since they have EPUB downloads, the savvy reader can simply unpack those to multipage HTML, as that's what EPUB is internally. I'm probably in the minority for desiring single- and multipage HTML for reading.
Kindle owners and those using either Kindle for PC/iPad/iPhone/Macintosh/BlackBerry/Android/Windows Phone or Mobipocket's Reader Desktop [available for Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Symbian Os, Palm Os, Cybook and iLiad] will be happy with the .mobi format.
it's not a fast site to work your way through, but appears worth it.
