   I recently uninstalled integry desktop which was given away here and since then when I try to instal some programs I get the message

   could not access network location %userprofile%\desktop\

   I am trying to install Macrium and it will not proceed. I have tried to do a registry restore with ERUNT but still no luck. Can anybody offer any suggestions. Please try to keep it fairly simple as I am not that confident!

   When you uninstalled did you go to control panel / add remove?? Sounds to me like a left over file is still in there somehow? And if you did a registry restore, perhaps that restored some fragments of desktop that were in there.

   I think I used revo, since my original post I have also done a windows repair (xp pro) from the disk and I still get the same message.

   Latest news I got it sorted. Used the following procedure.

   1. back up registry
   2. run regedit
   3. go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurentVersion \ Explorer \ User Shell Folders
   4. the folder with the problem desktop should be REG_EXPAND_SZ
   5. If not rename the file - a desktop
   6. click and create a new expandable file with the original name ie desktop
   7. give it a string value exactly as before - you have to retype - no copy and paste.
   8. close regedit and restart computer
   9. et voila I can now instal things again and as an added bonus I have my old icons back. Yippee!!!

   Just in case anybody else has probs. Thanks to http://windowsxp.mvps.org/msi1606.htm for guidance. I chose to rename the key instead of deleting it just in case. I'm not that confident of my abilities!

   And then you can go back into regedit and delete your renamed key! And it still works for me.

   frenchbob... very good! Glad you got things worked out! Sometimes it's hard undoing what we're 'fixing'. Believe me, I've been down that road many times!
