Hi ender,
Good post !
I installed Release Candidate 1 (RC1 for short) of this program when it came out, used it awhile and found it good (also found that more was done on it for good looks rather than actual usability over OpenOffice).
When RC4 came out, I tried to install it over RC1 after checking the Lotus/IBM site for guidance on the subject and still promptly crashed my working program.
Uninstalled RC4 to try and salvage things then uninstalled RC1 when that failed.
Tried reinstalling RC4 again but it kept searching for the RC1 installation folder (which I had deleted from the computer a while back because it took space) and failed.
Then I used several techniques to clean remnants of the installations (both RC1 and RC4) including cleaning the Registry.
Result : Still the same problem !
So I abandonned any attempts to install it until today when I saw your thread !
Upon seeing your post, I decided to take another look and digging deeper.
In order, I read this : http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/installGuide.jspa
Then this : http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/themes2/normandy/resources/installguide/en/install_1.0.htm
I found this corrected Before You Install :
* It is recommended that you save the installer to a new directory, for example, C:\Symphony_Install on Windows or /root/Symphony_Install on Linux. If you do not download the installer to a new directory, you should move or copy the file to a new directory once the download is complete. Your Windows temp directory and the directory from which you launch Symphony installation cannot contain non-ASCII characters or any of the following characters: ";|*?!#&$',=^@%
* When installing Beta 3 and a later version, it is possible to upgrade from Beta 1 or Beta 2, but it is highly recommended that you uninstall any previous version before installation to avoid potential conflicts. Installing Beta 1 or Beta 2 requires that you uninstall any other previous version before installation.
* You must uninstall Lotus Symphony before you switch to a different account on the same system to re-install Lotus Symphony.
To uninstall any previously installed version of IBM Lotus Symphony on Windows.
1. Close IBM Lotus Symphony before uninstalling.
2. Open the Control Panel by clicking Start -> Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add or Remove programs.
4. Select IBM Lotus Symphony, and click Remove.
Note: If uninstallation fails, refer to the Windows manual uninstallation instructions below.
Manual uninstallation instructions for Windows XP and Windows Vista
Try this manual uninstallation approach only when the normal uninstallation process fails.
1. Close IBM Lotus Symphony if it is running.
2. Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove IBM Lotus Symphony. You can download the utility from the following location: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
3. If the utility does not find any versions of IBM Lotus Symphony, proceed with the standard installation.
4. Delete the desktop icon and Start menu item.
5. Delete the installation directory completely. If it is running, end the soffice.exe process from the Task Manager window, then remove the installation folder, for example, C:\Program Files\IBM\Lotus\Symphony.
Following this extended advice, I downloaded the Microsoft utility from the location indicated above (the link is in the middle of the page between the MORE INFORMATION and Contents of the Readme.txt file sections).
With it, I found a Windows installer fragment named IBM lotus Symphony, removed it and was able to install the final version and finally got it to correctly work.
BUT BEWARE (FIRST TIME USERS AND REPEAT USERS)
Be sure to read the information entirely in all the links I provided to be sure of a problem free install or reinstall.
Warning : It is a big download for non cable or DSL users (192 MB) and on installing, it takes 494 MB (It puts lots of bits and pieces)
Hope that helps
Cheers
Quantum Dragon
Ender, you may want to look at this thread on OpenOffice : http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/3394
I added some links to many sections of the entire project site.
