   Question to the forum about backup software: What do folks recommend now for automatic backup? Here is my concern:

   GAOTD has in the past offered Ocster 1-Click Backup, which has “reverse incremental” backup, so that the big complete backup file is the most recent, and the small files are incremental differences going backwards into the past (not current). Well, with ransomware, that sounds like a bad strategy. With ransomware, you’ll need a complete backup from the day before the PC was infected, yes?

   What are the knowledgeable folks here recommending for good, automatic backup (ideally free) for a SOHO setup with two or three PCs, ideally using a network-type URL address to send the backups (like \\BACKUPCOMPUTER) rather than a USB connection or a mapped drive connection that will also be infected by the ransomware?

   I think you can solve the potential problem by modifying your setup.

   Your OS and programs aren't particularly valuable, since you can always reload them, and they don't change very often. Your data is valuable but it falls into "active data" and "static data". Active data is stuff you're working on/with; static data may be music, videos, photos, historical work product and other stuff that will not change. You need a frequent backup schedule for the "active data", a relatively infrequent schedule for the OS and programs, but only an archive copy of the "static data". The stuff you actually need to backup frequently is a small part of what's on your PC.

   It's a simple matter to create partitions for OS and Programs, Active Data, and Static Data using one of the various partitioning tools (you might toss in a partition for Games if you like) and then image each partition on an appropriate schedule (it's much faster to create an image than an incremental backup).

   I could be wrong but I think most ransomware changes access to your system or to the /users directory. If your data is on another partition then all you'd have to do is restore a non-infected image of the OS and programs and you'd be good to compute.

   I can't help on the http style backup because I use internal and external USB drives for my backup needs.
