You know how it recomends you do this ['exit all other applications'] before you continue w/ the SW. installation process ? Well I was wondering how many of you really do this and how important is it ? Do you also exit your internet connection ? -[I know w/ GAOTD you have to leave it on untill you activate the SW. but then do you HAVE to turn it off ?]

They say this because just in case a install wants to change a DLL or something that is currently in use by another application. The nice installs tells you what applications must be closed to install correctly. For anything found here, I don't believe I have found anything that you actually needed to close. Oh that ABF Outlook Express Backup 2.0, you had to close Outlook Express first I think. lol

In many cases the "requirement" to close everything is little more than a suggestion or a recommendation - that will allow the program to install without requiring a reboot.
The better installation programs will still allow an install to complete - but should a file be in use (that needs updating) a setting is written to the registry to delete/rename/update the "in use" file during the next reboot.
Closing down everything is often just saving you the need to reboot your system following the install.

i have learned that if one is useing zonealert, its best to turn it off. i dont know why, but it messes with things.

I tried to find more information about ZoneAlert, but I didn't find much. Usually people jump on ZoneAlarm for a software firewall (it's free too). Is there a reason why you picked ZoneAlert over ZoneAlarm? Just curious.

Thank You All for your input on this topic. I think I'm starting to get a grasp around the subject.
**ONE MORE QUESTION = Can you damage anything -[the SW, your PC] by not closing things?
Also, say your forget you have something running in the background[like in your system tray] and you install a new program that is similar-[like two audio type SW]- will that damage anything or mess-up the install? -[or does it just get fixed in the 'Reboot'.OK-- :0

Well JEG88, theoretically you should be okay. But even if you shutdown everything, things can go wrong. And wrong big time that Windows won't even boot and safe mode won't either. But if you plan ahead, you can fix virtually anything that goes wrong. But what Windows version are you using? Like Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, etc.
