Posted 16 years ago # -
Maizey,
Jiggly :)
I suppose it is based on this Finnish Song.
(you will find the translation next to it...)Posted 16 years ago # -
Robert, I've heard that song before, but never knew the translation. Funny...dancing to and fro! :D

Curious and intriguing take on music and color .. by Glenn Gould
A math/geek/romance comic with at touch of sarcasm xkcd
(yeah, I know .. but I *like* science ... surely I'm not the only one)
******
Hotdoge3: Welcome to the forum, and thank you for posting those links :}

Bobby, Those are great! I'm getting a charge out of the webcomic site! :D
I like this one: http://xkcd.com/256/
_________________________________________________A question on the Glenn Gould site... Am I missing something? When I click on an image it only expands, slightly. Is it supposed to open to a larger view? Just, wondering.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Maizey .. drag a picture to the musical staff above the images; then .. click the 'play' icon below the pictures. The images will 'play' in music across the screen.
As for the comics .. aren't they neat? I like the next one .. 257 ... seems simple enough ... looks like I should have chosen Navajo instead of Tslagi (Cherokee) to study

Bobby, Ahh...so much prettier! Color and everything! Thanks!

Check out this guy's site. You can rotate his web cam, and you can control a bunch of lights in the background in his office, turning them off and on.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Dan, I was just in that guy's office, flicking his lights off and on. He was sitting at his desk grinning every time the lighting changed. Why would someone want to do that? It is different. :)
Posted 16 years ago # -
You got me?! Did you notice you can send him a question using a form on the left....and he is supposed to answer. I asked him, "Why were we created only to suffer and eventually die?" He never answered.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Dan, maybe your question was too deep for a guy who's amused by flashing lights. :)
Posted 16 years ago # -
I got that question from a book called "Venus On The Half Shell", by Kilgore Trout, who is actually Kurt Vonnegut. This space wanderer, Simon Wagstaff, spent years searching the galaxy for someone who could answer that question. If I remember correctly, he finally found some guru type guy on top of a mountain on some planet who answered him, and the last line in the book is the answer.
Posted 16 years ago # -
The answer is, of course, another question. You do remember that from the book, don't you?
_______________________________------------EDIT---------------
BTW, Vonnegut is my favorite author. I've read them all.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Yes I do. Did you google that, or have you read the book?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Here you'll find tools for writers, gamers, and artists; randomly assembling names, concepts, and more for when you need inspiration, or just a bit of amusement.
___________________________________________________________Dan, your answer is above. I was editing while you posted.

Wow. Vonnegut is my favorite author too. I just read that even though everyone thought he wrote Venus On The Half-Shell, it was really written by someone to whom he gave permission to author the book....and he later said he regretted it.

Back in December, while I was on break at work, I noticed a young girl, about 21, who was working there part time, reading a book. I asked her what it was, and she said it was a Tom Robbins novel called "Another Roadside Attraction". I'd never read any of his stuff and we started talking about books. She said that Vonnegut was her favorite, too. She told me that I was the first person that she'd ever met who's a Vonnegut fan. The break was over and we were looking forward to talking again. As luck would have it, the next day me and 11 other people were permanently laid off. I never saw her again.

This is the first time that I've heard that he may not have written Venus. Hmmm.

Just tried the "Weird Science" generator from the Seventh Sanctum site above.
We need definitions for these:
"Pharmacoacoustics"
"Evolutionary Paraepidemochemistry"
"Toxicobotany"
__________________________________________From the "Tavern Name" generator: "The Virtuous Demon Saloon" :)
Posted 16 years ago # -
Pharmacoacoustics: Music piped into a pharmaceutical company's offices that not only has a soothing effect on its employees, but also brainwashes them into creating the most profitable drugs.
Posted 16 years ago # -
4:30am...I gotta get some sleep. In the words of Kurt Vonnegut, "God bless you, Mr. Rosewater!"
(One of only TWO books I have ever read with god in the title. The other was "Chariots Of The Gods")
See ya tomorrow......

Try Poetry in Motion
When you get to the site, click on the large circle to play. It will open up a pop-up window with your playing field. Be sure to enable Java.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Evolutionary Paraepidemochemistry:
A systematic process for determining the changing behaviors of epidemiological statistics and relational chemistry
.... I think ... at least that's the way it breaks down (evolutionary: systematic process; para: beside of or together; epidemo: study of an epidemic; chemistry: class I got a B in years ago)
****
Toxicobotany: study of poisonous plants
Toxic: poisonous ; botany: study of plant life/vegetation

Maizey: Virtuous Demon Saloon? I wonder if it is run by the same folks that run the 'Screaming Chicken Saloon' in Devore? :> That might be fodder for a new thread: offbeat names for businesses ... run with it, Pretzel!Posted 16 years ago # -
Bobby, did you submit an entry to "Poetry in Motion"? I'll have to try later, when I can give it some thought.
Very definite definitions for the "weird science" words. You do know your science lingo (Latin?)!
You're right, Creamy probably could come up with some exciting descriptions for bar names.
Posted 16 years ago # -
Maizey, yes .. actually, I'm a published poet although I've not submitted any of those to the site. The daily win is simply luck of the draw, but it's fun to see what people can do with words.
As for the definitions, blame it all on root words. I was an English major back in the day ... not Science. Science always intrigued me, but my brother chose it as a career... he's The Brain. I'm probably closer to Pinky :} snarf !
