Thanks rezidue.. I think I'm going to keep on waiting until all the bugs are out. From your links, it looks like there are too many problems at present!

This blog entry: IEBlog : IE and Windows XP Service Pack 3 at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/05/05/ie-and-xpsp3.aspx
which may be an official MS blog, talks about the inability to uninstall Internet Explorer if SP3 is installed after it. Apparently the same problem if IE8 Beta is installed. Sounds like a real mess.
JKPosted 16 years ago # -
http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/Default.aspx - that one is a real biggie for AMD systems, if you installed yourself, it should be ok, but if a manufacturer deployed an image that was not originally an AMD install, there could be a problem.
The locking in of the installed Internet Explorer version at IE7 is no biggie if you are happy with IE7, a lot of people are surprised that SP3 didn't apply IE7 anyway, but it's a point to consider if reverting to IE6 may be needed.
PS. Isn't "inabilty to uninstal Internet Explorer" something which got MS into trouble?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Yes I read about that a few days ago in the news. People had the same problem with vista SP1 kinda strange, maybe someone is hacking MS or one of their workers don't like MS. Wonder when they'll fix this bug. http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/software/svpk/2008/04/windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu_c81472f7eeea2eca421e116cd4c03e2300ebfde4.exe XP SP3
Just a quick question: Why do people hate vista, I found it okay.
Posted 16 years ago # -
I think "hate" is probably too strong a word. "Refuse to install" is probably better.
1. When released lots of legacy hardware didn't work with Vista - and Hardware manufacturers were not spending any time writing/developing new drivers for equipment they were no longer selling (the would prefer people buy new hardware).
2. Lots of existing software didn't work (and lots of it still doesn't). Lots of software needed updates to work correctly on Vista.
3. XP is familiar and does the job for most users. People resent having to throw out something that works, replacing it with something that works mostly, with no apparent good reason or benefits to the user.
4. More of Microsoft crap - the lies behind the "Vista Ready" deals Microsoft did with Intel - allowing underspec video chips to be shipped as "Vista Ready" so Intel could meet it's sales quotas (result - people purchase a "Vista Ready" PC, only to find it "isn't")
Vista SP1 Beta (White Paper) - See the comments at the end.
Vista Negativity = More happy users
Vista vs XP - The Benchmark Rundown
Of course for some users they will "find it ok". Finding something "ok" or "not bad" doesn't make it "good". It just means you managed to avoid hitting the problems other people have experienced up until now. Naturally there are users who can live with Vista and will probably never hit any of the problems reported by other users.
There are users who are running XP or 2000 or even earlier Windows versions, who simply refuse to upgrade because what they have isn't broke, and upgrading will give them nothing that they need. Effectively upgrading and all the problems that go with it will cost them more in time, money and headaches than the "benefits" of Vista will ever be worth.
And that is the crux of it as far as I am concerned. From an end user point of view - Vista is a bulkier, slower, but prettier XP. Most of the software works (now) but it's a hassle when everything is set up the way you like it. Over the past few years Microsoft has given computer users too many reasons to avoid Vista - and not enough reasons to ditch what they have and "upgrade".
Naturally there are those who have decided to upgrade - and to those people I simply smile and wave to wish you good luck. I'm not saying you are wrong, just perhaps we have each based our respective decisions on different information and past experiences. If you are happy with Vista then that is just super. :)

Hi, BuBBy,
you have forgotten those unhappy people, like me, who had no choice.
When you want to buy a new computer to a reasonable price, you have to go with Vista.
For downgrading to XP, you have to pay for XP into the bargain.
Now I am sitting here and have to come to an arrangement with that system; that doesn't mean that I love it :(
Nevertheless, I hope you will smile to me too and wish me good luck :)

My windows is set for notify update but don't install and got my notice of SP3 a couple of days ago. Glad I did have it set that way. When I saw all the amount of downloading I knew I'd better wait awhile till I see results from others.

XP is so yesterday.

I love the good old times

Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be,
Vistas' shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.XP
Had to go I don't know, Vista is gay.
I said,
Somethings wrong, now I'm stuck, I'm gonna pay.Yesterday,
Everything's a stable game to play,
Now It crashes, want to throw away...
Oh, I believe in yesterday.Why I
Had to upgrade, had it made, it wasn't so.
I said,
Something mean, damn blue screen, it's running slow.Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now SP1 is here, I have to say,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.
(Thanks for the inspiration creamy)

BuBBy that is great :)))
My "song" is much more prosaic :
Just loaded up "some" 256 pictures into my Vista-PC.
Wonderful, so fast and I could look at all in the slide show.
Then I began to sort them, copy, paste, delete...
with picture 183 the system said, that the picture-format is unknown, 184, 185, 186 from 187 the jpgs was known again, 195 - 207 unknown, 208 ,209 known, the rest unknown. From 183 the system needed so much time to show the pics, that I could make coffee twice, got an apple, made a cheese sandwich, shot some pictures from the balcony - I love my Vistas.
I have to say, that the PC isn't online yet, Vistas is still in its original state, no other program was running parallel.
BuBBy, don't smile so sardonic - I can see you :(

BuBBy,
I wish some unemployed (or just bored) singer would record your version of the song, post it U-Tube and have some script kiddie make it so it would play every time Vista is booted.
I know, I know. That would break many laws. Copyright, breaking into M$ production server (I think this has been done in the past, but I doubt anybody could do it these days), hacking, you name it. It is meant as a joke *don't try this at home*
On a more serious note, it seems like XP sp3 contains some "great" feature from Vista. It is obvious that the fact that new computers can only be bought with Vista is M$ attempt to flood the market with Vista only. Why? to have millions of beta testers who not only would do the job, but they will ALSO pay to do it!
What billion dollar company that has been manufacturing and selling a product for more than 6 years, comes up with a newer version and refuses to sale the one they were selling for so long in less than a month after the new one came out?
Has even M$ itself done this in the past? As far as I remember, when Windows 32 came out you could still buy DOS. Windows 95? Win 32 was available if you wanted. In fact, the BIG guys (Dell, HP, ...) allowed you to configure the computer you wanted to buy online and they always had a few OS's to choose from.
I've been very lucky. My PC (HP with XP pro which I upgraded to sp2) has been running for almost 2 years and I have never had to do a clean reinstall. I can count the number of BSOD with my fingers (no toes involved). But besides luck I have always been careful about maintenance.
But I mean, come on, there has to be a line which people should just refuse to pass.
I am not saying that XP is better than Vista or whatever. I am just appalled at M$ obvious manipulation of the market to fatten their wallets even more which in itself is a ridiculous thing.
There should be ways to get XP pro if you really want it. I remember hearing somewhere that you could ASK for XP, but if you didn't say anything you would get Vista, but this was a while back and not even I rely on my memory anymore.
Is it still possible to buy a computer with a free (linux) OS and buy a Windows XP legit disk distribution (which you are paying for anyway if it come with the computer) and install it yourself? Does M$ still manufacture and sell XP disk distributions?
I have this theory that when M$ realized that people wouldn't let go of their stable XP until they pried it from their dead, cold hands, they decided to start patching XP until it either broke completely or it would become practically identical to Vista.
I wouldn't put this past the Redmond guys. They've done much worse things. It looks like the profit they make by breaking laws is bigger than the fines that come with the anti-trust law disregards. This is just my opinion.
I am very paranoid, yes, but I am not getting this sp3 on my server. I'll put in on some virtual computer and wait to see what happens when the smoke clears out. I have an XP pro sp2 disk which has its own product key. I guess M$ can refuse to honor their contract about support or they can come to my house and knee-cap me until I relinquish it (Just kidding).
Anyway, great song BuBBy. If you are not one already, you should look into becoming a song writer.
That's it

OK, someone can record it and I'll take the royalties after McCartney takes his cut. :)
In terms of the "phasing out" of XP, it's nothing new - Microsoft did the same with 95, 98, ME, NT, and 2000. It is partly to get people to move onto the "current" OS as it actually costs a lot of money to support retired versions, and it is hard enough for tech support staff to stay current across one version of windows (never mind 2 or 3 versions).
But until the reason someone would leave XP for Vista becomes a lot stronger, many users see no need or benefit to change. In my opinion the biggest obstacle for many is Vista is still not seen as a "must have" - there are no compelling features or benefits that users cannot live without.
As it appears, Microsoft has not been able to offer a big enough carrot for users to switch, it is now coming down to Microsoft wielding a stick, removing support, cutting supply, and ensuring new computers only come with Vista. Many users will get Vista not because it is better but because they no longer have any choice in the matter.
Hopefully Microsoft will learn from the obvious issues Vista has had in getting widespread acceptance and support when it comes time to release Windows 7 (or whatever it ends up being called).

Nice work BuBBy !

wow, i'm feeling pretty lucky. i guess i bought my laptop at the right time. when i ordered it at the beginning of last september, i was given a choice of xp or vista......i chose xp.
the gall and manipulation of microsoft is just infuriating.
x1Posted 16 years ago # -
I would stand here and look at the terrible Vista that everyone is talking about, but I can't, as I have to go take an XP.....

Nice words BuBBy!
This remends me of the time when every one was using win 98 when XP came out and all the trouble that came with it. I hated XP. I hated the way it looked. Kept using 98, till 1 and a half years ago. Never needed a reason to upgrade the OS just upgraded the computer when needed to keep up. With the newer computer now running XP MCE the first thing I did was change to the Windows classic theme. I hated XP's fat blue window frames. Then having to go to look into control panel was enough to pull my hair out that I change that to classic too. Never understood the reason MS made you go through so many hoops just to see info on your printer or get to the uninstall list.
About 7 months ago I change my desk top theme to Dark Black Alien Theme by Alienware. The black scheme matches nicely with my black Harley Davidson FireFox theme. Nothing looks XP on this rig.
Vista heh to me is nothing but eye candy.Posted 16 years ago # -
Of course XP could go the way of Win98, where unofficial service packs continued to be released (98SE uSP3 is currently in beta). Even long after Microsoft had ripped the rug of support from under it's feet, a dedicated user community continued to package and release fixes for all the loyal die-hards. http://exuberant.ms11.net/ and http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm
http://www.msfn.org/board/Windows-9x-Member-Projects-f91.html
(Check the posting dates... those Win98 users are still going at it).Posted 16 years ago # -
Thanks BuBBY for the msfn.org link cause I still have my old rig set up networked with my XP as a backup and for the teens to do homework while I'm on this one. Gave me a giggle, not sure if I remember right but the SP3 for XP is like nearly 1 GB then looking at the SP3 Beta for 98se only 20 MB.
Funny that it was just 10 years back with a hard drive of only 15GB 98SE ONLY USED LIKE 300MB. Today you might have a fresh 300GB hard drive XP or Vista and wonder why it only says 279GB in My Computer folder, wondering where the heck did the other 20 or more gigs go too? LOLPosted 16 years ago # -
With Vista, all I know is a friend of mine got that with her new system. She tried and tried to get XP instead and was told she'd have to buy it, but XP was flying off the shelves faster than they could stock it. She was also told if she put XP on, that her warranty would no longer be good! That's like force feeding the consumers! Well she ended up putting XP on it anyhow, after having to format the HD to get rid of Vista, and now she's happy again.
Not long ago my brother got 2 new laptops and he has a lot of aeronautical and medical programs (since he's a doctor and flies on off days), and none of his expensive programs would work on Vista! That totally ticked him off!
I know we'll all probably have to get 'with it' when things smooth out with Vista eventually. I had been running Win98 on my older machine and fought getting XP when that came out.. but after tons of problems, (the dreaded blue screen), memory issues, etc. hubby kept saying get a new machine. I finally formatted that machine and did a fresh install of XP and told him, I didn't need a new machine, I now have one.
So.. I think the main thing to remember is if it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it!Posted 16 years ago # -
The saga continues. No, not SAGA, saga, as in when will Billie Behemoth finally cave to pressure and just acknowledge that Vista is crapware? For those who are shopping for a new computer, it might pay NOT to listen to the salesman who tries to steer you towards Vista... according to Null, DELL and others' PC menus offer either XP installs or at least as an ala carte side disk.
Posted 16 years ago # -
my laptop is a dell, i got xp installed for no extra cost.

Microsoft you test OK it good, not good we may see? if to bad may make a fix in a few week's time that OK by you. may be mac is best.
