is this a stand-alone program, or should i already have the previous service packs?
Hi Funky
WinXP SP3 includes all previously released updates(+servicepacks) for the OS. There even seem to be a small number of new functionalities.(316MB)
All of your questions answered... (except probably the really obscure ones)

Strange.Windows XP SP3 does not include IE 7.
Correct - I read that as only 30% of business clients run IE7 - Nobody wants to be force fed - but I suspect it might be a remnant from the original AntiTrust case when it was IE3 (or 4?) bundled with windows and users wanted to have the option to use Netscape Navigator as their preferred browser, so Microsoft was forced to not bundle it with the Service Packs - and users had to download and install it separately.
I think by forcing IE7 on all XP users would only make Microsoft less popular.
Well I use FF anyway (with IE switch). And FF 3 looks promising.
:)
Could be an obscure question ..
Do I need another SP3 version to slipstream SP3 ?
Use the latest to slipstream.
I downloaded a RTM this week already, I am downloading an official release for slipstreaming purposes now.
If you trust me, use that link or if you browse to http://www.flexbeta.net the link is there also.
Q: Does SP3 include everything from SP1 and SP2 or do I need to install those first?
A: Though XP SP3 aggregates all of the previously-released XP fixes, Microsoft now says that you will need to install at least SP1 on XP before installing SP3. The company recommends installing SP2 first as well, though that is not required.
So SP1 is a pre-requisite for installing, wonder if it is also a pre-requisite for slipstreaming - and also, the other point, can you slipstream using a lower SP than the one you were slipstreaming, or do you have to update first?
SP3 has lock, stock, the lot.
Since XP came out every update + those private updates which you got when you contacted support from M$.

nLite is all one needs.
Wondering if anyone has had any problems with installing this service pack yet or if it might correct some problems i think MS is having at least on my system.
I did not encounter a single problem installing SP3.
PC feels faster and more responsive.
I'm going to wait a bit and see peoples reactions on how things go after they have installed it....
take it you must have been one of the unlucky ones like me with service pack with MS on a old HP machine i had fullbug... I am very leary on installing it to be honest:) It isn't being offered at windows update page though so i will just wait till it is and a few weeks after to see if any incompatibilities

> What Not To Remove For Some Programs
http://www.computingondemand.com/articles/Tutorial-SlipstreamingSP2/page1.shtml
Windows XP is PLAYED OUT! I can't wait until the NEXT new windows system comes out so everyone can complain about it and talk about how much better VISTA is. It happens every time.
The people who hang on to the old stuff like XP and hate the new OS remind me of a couple of guys I met in a record shop back in 1985 who said that people would NEVER give up on vinyl to buy CDs. The record shop owner agreed with them, and we argued the point for a few minutes. He said he was always going to stock mostly albums. About a year later he went out of business.
THIS IS AN RC NOT THE FULL VERSION. THE FULL VERSION IS SMALLER AND WILL COME OUT A FEW DAYS LATER: http://www.news.com/8301-13860_3-9931343-56.html?tag=nefd.lede NOT TODAY (Because of problems) Have to wait again :( going 2 come out soon though :) maybe next month
creamypretzel, whats wrong with hanging on to XP? I have tried Vista and hated it, and I'm not the only one, take your smug attitude and give it a good telling off.
guest32 sp3 is on w.u.
According to that article - the "incompatibility" will affect hardly any end users.
Unless you happen to be running Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System
I think I'm pretty safe there. ;)
Hi CreamyPretzel. there's no doubt that XP will eventually fade away, but until all the problems associated with Vista have been ironed out I doubt it will be the preferred OS. I bought Vista last September and was initially really impressed with it. The look and they way it worked; however that was short lived as within a few days of installing the OS I started to have problems with it. Most of my programs such as Nero wouldn't work; loads of my games that I'd paid a fortune for wouldn't work. A window kept popping up saying my bios was corrupted (despite the motherboard [MoBo]being a new purchase that was suppoed to be 'Vista' ready). I ended up buying a new MoBo, but got the same error message. Then my DVD and CD icons disappeared from the my computer so I stupidly bought a new (and expensive) DVD rewriter only to find that the problem was still there. Basically I was only able to copy data onto the computer via the internet or via a USB memory stick. I searched high and low for a way to access my DVD's and was not able to. Installing it on another computer didn't work because I'd already registered the copy for one particular computer. So it's no wonder I and many others who have had similar and countless other problems with Vista don't want it just yet.
I am looking forwards to being able to run Vista, assuming that Microsoft fix all the issues. I an aware that the new OS had major changes made to the kernel, so I can understand why there were problems running some software, but the number of errors I had was ridiculous. I'm also sure that buying a new computer with Vista already installed is probably the way forwards if you want an error free Vista, but I never buy 'off the shelf' computers because I think they are a rip off. Apart from the first computer I ever bought (A 386 with 4Mb RAM and 25Hz cpu) I've always custom build my own. Until I start reading a lot more positive reviews of Vista I'll be very wary of reinstalling it due to the problems I had. I really do hope things get sorted soon as I bought Vista so that I could check out the DX10 graphics in Crysis and other games with DX10 graphics (I only have a few besides Crysis so far - such as Company of Heroes and Lost Planet - the latter came bundled with my NVidia graphics card)
Well hold everything, at least in downloading Windows Service Pack 3 for XP.
It was supposed to be made publicly available today, Microsoft say they have had to delay
this and also pull Vista SP1 from windows update site due to a problem with compatibility
in Dynamic RMS ( Retail Management System ) a Microsoft Sales Utility used for businesses,
Service Packs will remain offline until a fix has been sorted, Microsoft refuses to give a date for when they will be available again ?

'Fullbug behave' sukibabe? I will do that when idiots such as creamypretzel dont paint all people who dont see things his way with old idiots at a record store.....
Actually it's not on WU that's a release candidate if you read carefully enough. SP3 was delayed and removed from WU because of problems.
