I have downloaded a number of media files such as MP3 and MP4, avi, flash, etc. I also have numerous programs that convert between modes.
Where can I find a simple primer to educate me in the how and why for the various multimedia modes?

Uhhh.. Y'know, I'm not sure. about a list. though Afterdawn's Glossary might be a good start.
MP3 is a lossy (as opposed to FLAC, which does not lose quality when compressing) audio compression format- I think it's MPEG-1 audio layer III technically. MPEG-4 is a lossy video compression format. so is MPEG-2, which compresses less and loses less.
AVI, MKV, VOB, etc. are container files which usually have at least one video and one audio stream twined together in different 'standard' ways.
Flash, Quicktime, and the flavors of RealMedia are proprietary formats. DivX too, after version 4- XviD is it's free twin.
