Reference: GOTD February 6, 2015 - Loaris Trojan Remover

Today on February 19, 2015 this previously installed and registered GOTD program showed a UPDATE window to apply the next minor build, from v1.3.6.4 to v1.3.6.5, and doing so will cause this security program to become TRAIL software and the use of the previous License Key (for Lifetime License) is no longer valid.

While I understand that GOTD terms states "No free upgrades to future versions", surely a minor build update is something different.

Also note that this program does not have any setting to prevent update checks, security definitions aside, and the pop-up update window will always be shown for the next minor build when the program launches at system start-up.

I used Loaris Support Ticket online system to report this issue and am waiting a response. To be continued...

My copy is also showing an update, but I have not downloaded it. I checked the ? and it says a lifetime license, not a year as I thought it was, so if I had not read your comments on today's give away I would probably have updated it.
I will wait and see what response you get, and perhaps keep a record in future of what the conditions of the GOTD are for the different software I do decide to keep, (of course if I decide to buy the offer, I do keep a record).

Hello,lost my copy also by clicking on update.I know there are no updates for future versions, but didn't expect to be shut down like that or I wouldn't have clicked on it.Live and learn,very good trick................

Thanks for the update ChrisS.

I'll consider this issue closed now as I didn't know somebody from Loaris has posted what appears to be a final solution for this mishap.

For those who are clicking the URL for the order form shown above, just remove the trailing ")" seen at the end, as it inadvertently became part of the URL. Also note that the link re-directs to a secure webpage at Avangate which will process your order.

While I still have an Open Ticket with Anastasia Shinkevich from Loaris Support Team, I'll update this post only if there is something more to add.

Thanks to all of you for this update. I was unsure as to whether I was going to keep Loaris, but, after running it since the giveaway, I've been very pleased with its performance. Am now considering buying the updated version.

IMHO, I don't think it was a scam but an unfortunate realization once a new minor version became available.

I really don't think Loaris wanted to shoot itself in the foot by releasing a "Lifetime License" protection program that lasted for only two weeks to then alienate potential customers.

They are a small company, and perhaps they might run another campaign here on GOTD if they can figure out how to provide update definitions for older minor builds, but in the Update section of the program on the right-pane, it states: The Update module ensures that the program is always up to date. This is done in two ways - by updating the virus signature database and by updating application.

I'll give Loaris the benefit of the doubt on this one.

I agree with arttronics, many of the developers giving away on this site are trying to build up a customer base for their future. The giveaway site is in very good standing with the major search engines due to its vigilance in keeping out malware. You can rest assured that the giveaway team vet everyone before allowing them to use this site as allowing scam artists to use these services would also hurt their reputation. There has been a couple of instances over the last eight years where something untoward has happened but the giveaway team were totally unaware at the time and as soon as it was noted they sorted it.

I've had some very fruitful communications with developers that have given away on this site, for example, on several occasions I've allowed software to be updated and then found the programs to have reverted back to demos; (usually when I've been half asleep and clicked the wrong button, and before I became aware that it's possible to turn off most updaters). I've contacted the developers and in most cases they have given me a key for the next version totally free. Others have given me other free software. I've also received lifetime licences for several programs for adding suggestions to the Idea Informer (as well as a weird LED watch). I can only shower grateful thanks on this site and the many developers who have given their products for free over the last eight and a bit years.

It's also one of the reasons I continue to administrate the forums and moderate the gamegiveaway site.

Krissy, it looks more like the Loaris staff didn't understand the GOTD limitations on "updates and customer support".

If you click over to the Loaris FAQ, you find that "We offer our customers 15 days for free trial of Loaris Trojan Remover."

It's not unusual for new program versions of the GOTD giveaways to appear a few months later. A longer term trial is sometimes necessary before you make the decision to buy (and we know what happens when you click the "update" button). How ofter does the Loaris Trojan Remover update? According to this site, a new version appears every 2-3 weeks.

So, you can get a 15 day trial from the publisher every day or you can get the same (or less!) with a special release from GOTD.

I can't come up with a good reason why Loaris would willingly engage in a fair bit of effort to achieve what they could have achieved with no additional effort.

It looks like a clear case of "oops" to me.

It is clearly a scam. If you don't upgrade then your definitions are out of date. Then if you update (even to the minor build) you lose the ability to use the software. I've had this happen to prior "free" software on this site. They slip in an upgrade, which destroys the license. If you don't upgrade, the software is useless. Total scam!!

Normally software of this type updates the database on a very regular basis, Malwarebytes for example, daily, therefore I am personally surprised Loaris does not.

I would not call it a scam, but the utility is not low cost, even with the discount, which is why I decided not to buy, though I have bought 7 of the GOTD in the few moths I have been using the offers on the site, one of the reasons I did not buy being I did notice it was not updating the definitions, even after a week, (a long time in the world of the virus).

I think it was not a good idea to put a utility like this on GOTD when it would only last a week, and if Loaris did not realize this would happen,it was a rather unfortunate mistake. No reflection on GOTD as far as I am concerned, it is a great site, and a way to really check out software before buying, but I will not be buying a copy of this.
