Hi Clemmie,
Best rated and downloaded doesn't always mean the best program.
But yes ,it would be interesting to see how many people visit GAOTD each day and from which corner of the earth.
(And how many of them joined the forum)
:)You might be interested in the top-10-of-the-year-2007 ...

@Robert: speakin' of your interest in seeing how many people visit this site each day....
I would like to see something along the lines of a guest map, where people can post their location .. not personal information, simply geographical area. Translation into so many languages indicates Giveaway's worldwide appeal; I, for one, would be interesting to see where we're all callin' home.
Blawg Review and Brain Error have entirely different versions of guestmaps; Google has their own version and so does the fellow at Thompson BD, who built his own version.

Hello Bobby
A Map!! Oh Yes indeed!!!
What an Excellent idea you had!!!I suppose we could even do it without the help of TPTB, no?
With so many ingenious people in the Forum, it could be done, don't you think?
It could really be a lot of fun!!
We should see what the Grand Poobah says :-DLater, Manu <(*o*)>

i'm down with a map.

That's an excellent idea Bobby. It would be great to see where this project has found its way; Outer Mongolia perhaps, or Midway Island. Using the Google map we'd be able to zoom in on locations, lol.
As for the best giveaway; maybe we should post our votes in the forums each week and pick the winner on a weekend. We could then have a monthly winner, and at the end of the year decide between the monthlies.
I for one found the following either useful or good to have for a rainy day. I thought maybe we should list the best three to make it interesting. I'd be quite happy to do the counting up etc at the end of each week and month. The winner could be posted as a separate post with information on it's usefulness together with the voting statistics. Maybe the administrators could add the download statistics as well. :)
For this week my choices are:
1) Cyberpower audio editing Lab
2) Topaz moment
3) RESTrict control panel (this has replaced win boost that I've been using for years and once I've paid for all the pre ordered games that I have on order at the moment I'll probably buy this as I want the updates.I've included the following in my preferences Adolix pdf converter given away on the 2nd of April to today’s (9th April) giveaway Flash Optimizer. That will mean the weekly choices will run from Friday to the following Thursday each week.
It may be an idea if those who are interested in this project post a link to this thread whenever they remember. I'll try to do so as well, that way we may get more interest. I'm sure that the majority of community members don't bother posting here in the forums. (but I may be wrong - it took me over a year to start posting regularly.
I'll repost the idea onto another forum post.
regards
Stephen

Wow, Great idea WR!!! :D

If anybody has an idea how we could start the "Map" thingy, I would be willing to help, but I can't start the project, know nothing of the where/how/when...Ciao, Manu

In the meantime, all you need to do is click on the blue "member" under someone's nick and IF they entered it, their location will show up in their profile.
Except Robert didn't list his location. LOLPosted 16 years ago # -
I have another suggestion. I think that rather than just an overall (voter) total number listed under each posting as to whether or not it is helpful, BOTH numbers should be listed.....such as NO 27, YES 62. I have seen the numbers posted this way on other sites and it seems to help me more.
If I see a "+3" listed under a posting, I cannot tell whether the posting did not generate much interest, or if it was helpful to a hundred people and not helpful to 97. I am much more likely to read the posting that has generated a lot of numbers on the voting than I am to read the same posting with a small overall number (even though it may have actually generated just as much voting). -Dan

It seems to me that everybody is speaking about another thing ?
Clemmie starts this thread with the
1.- best rated and downloaded GAOTD for the month;then Robert wants to know
2.- how many people visit GAOTD each dayand even
3.- from which corner of the earthand creamypretzel wants to get the
4.- total number listed under each posting as to whether or not it is helpfulMany ideas, who will realize that ?

I doubt #2 will be displayed - but as a ballpark figure take the number of votes and multiply by 100
It's probably not entirely accurate - but it does give some sense of proportion to the number of downloads versus the number of votes.
I know I rarely vote - and I do not trust yes or no votes as an indicator of "good" or "bad" software. I'm sure in my group of '100 downloaders' there are another 98 who place the same lack of significance on yes or no votes to affect their decision to download the giveaway or not.
I'm guessing there are more than a few users who vote no in the first 20 minutes of each giveaway just because reading the indignant reaction from the comments section provides so much entertainment. "How could you vote 'No'? I really like this program. etc".

sigh .. chemo fog again and again ..
Thanks, Graylox :)
As for the number of daily visitors, I took BuBBy's estimate and ran with it: if a particular giveaway receives 400 votes, that translates to Giveaway of the Day's website receiving ...approximately... a jaw-dropping 40,000 hits in 24 hours?!

Hi Bobby :D
I didn't know, I'm sorry. I didn't read those threads!
Hope things are going a bit better.
If you need anything, let us know! What about a BIG jug of Mango Juice?? ;)
Amicalement, Manu
Posted 16 years ago # -
<perk> mango juice?! I LOVE mango juice! Became addicted to the stuff while living in Hawaii. The odds on finding it here, in this little town, are non-existent; we do not even have a stop light, let alone a grocery store! Mango juice is only slightly less scarce than good enchiladas.
As for the chemo .. no worries (other than being down to one brain cell..ha!).

Hi Bobby
Tell me, where is Missourah?? I mean, in what state?
You do know I'm a bit loopy, right?
So, couldn't we concoct something, maybe send you some frozen stuff at least??
Gee, I had a Mango tree and a few Papaya ones too in my yard in Africa!Think about it!
Mango Princess :*DPosted 16 years ago # -
Missourah? Ahhhh, that's how locals pronounce 'Missouri.' I live in a very smallllll town on the Missouri River (which, at the moment, is trying to scramble out of its banks... which should explain where my mind has been lately).
Posted 16 years ago # -
Bobby
Your mind is in the banks? Scratching head...
Hummm, me thinks this must be a joke I don't understand! :)But returning to the Mangos, can't I send you a bag full of them?
Then you could do the juice yourself.
Ohhh that could really be fun!! Mangos from Canada to Missouri, grown in Maroque or Argentine.
Are we international or what!! Bwahaaaaawa!!!Royal Clowness, Manu

Remember if you are doing the downloads - don't count the 'no' votes - and remember this model is about as rough as possible - but it seems to be accurate at least once a month ;)

Hi Bobby, sorry to hear about the challenges you have to meet.
About the chemo, I know you are a strong lady; about the Missouri, I'll put some more water into my drinks (I mean coffee); about the brain cells, let's connect yours and mine, together we'll have two, that's twice as much as most... oh, no! NO politics !Posted 16 years ago # -
LeKanaw .. I should have said that the Missouri River is in flood stage, and because I live a quarter-mile or less from the river, I have spent a lot of time checking the water levels, eyeing sandbags that need to be filled and wondering whether I can still hoist my great-grandparents' antiques into a truck (yes). I also took one of my grandsons for a drive last night, about four miles down the road, where a bridge over a flooded creek has already washed out. He was astonished at the power of the raging water in a small creek and got a better idea of what a river the size of the Missouri was capable of doing. (Water was two-stories high in this area during the Flood of '93.)
...but Mango Princess Care Packages .. that took my mind completely off the flood waters! :)

Graylox .. I look at it this way.... "Cancer? meh. Chemo fog? arrrrrghl" Feel free to point out any Foggy moments in the future :) I'm also thinking of changing my forum name .. how about Foggy Bottoms? (I do live in farmland known as 'the Missouri River Bottoms,' you know.)
PS: forgot to mention how funny you are! Love the politics comment!
Posted 16 years ago # -
Bobby, fog can be quite nice too, you avoid to see a lot of the annoying details of daily life. I have FMS-fog What about the "Foggy Sisters" ?
Posted 16 years ago # -
<- Scratching head .. FMS? Foggy Sisters I like!
I may be making tomorrow's posts from higher ground....the flood waters have converged on my daughter's pastureland, across the street. Rather strange, to see fish when one expects to see horses :)
And... I didn't mean to hijack the thread, folks! I'll get back on topic.

I'm thinking of you !Posted 16 years ago # -
Bobby......I just stumbled upon this thread and saw some things that made me so sad. I had no idea you were on chemo. I hope everything is going well. And now you have to deal with this flood issue. God bless you! I will keep you in my prayers. Please keep us posted.
Sorry to post off-topic.

i want to add my wishes. i haven't commented sooner, because it brings some painful memories, but i my thoughts have been with you. you have a wonderful attitude and that is important.

Buckleysmom: No reason to be sad! My faith has kept a smile through the entire regimen. I've finished chemo .. surgery, chemo and radiation were a breeze. It's chemo-fog, an after-effect that affects the thinking, speaking and reasoning processes, that is making me crazy o.O
For instance, I can write, but cannot speak clearly; my memory is delightfully and often-humorously AWOL (I knew it yesterday .. I might know it again tomorrow .. I just can't think of it now!). Altered body parts just gave me a list to starboard, but fortunately, I still have sealegs. I may even write a book: How Can I Lose All The Hair On My Head And Still Have To Shave My Legs?
Between my profound Faith and a slightly warped Spirit of Play I'm doing fine. Besides, the cancer was a direct result of my military service (even though TPTB are arguing that point, somewhat). I volunteered to serve my country. Many have lost a lot more than I have.
BLESS YOU for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. I'll have some strawberry ice cream in your honor :)
Funkymom .. painful memories? I am so sorry. So very sorry.
Graylox .. fibrofog? that's a new one. The military docs are only now exploring the link between PTSD and fibro. Please tell me that you don't have fibromyalgia.
Now, I'm off to inflate my little yellow raft and Mae West. Oh, I can't forget my fishing poles! (Floating off into the sunset, singing .. 'the tide is high but I'm holdin' on...' and maybe a verse or two of 'In The Naaaaavy' ).
