Well geeez Maizey.....Turkey Hill should give you a nice BIG coupon after that ad you posted for them. My faves are oreo cookie and choc chip cookie dough, but I do also like the peanut butter cup and TH has the only chocolate I like. Ooh yummy! Makin me hungry. Hey girl.....you're a lot closer to me than I thought. We go to the Lancaster area at least once a year....love it there. You said Elk County right? I gotta go look it up on Google Earth. Have you ever been to Sight n Sound?
I'm willing to donate.. how about you?

Freebird.....I tried to use the electric broom once, but when I got to the end of the cord the plug pulled out and I fell back to earth. That smarts big time!

Buckleysmom, I'm about 200 miles away from Lancaster. Haven't been down that way in a long time. My brother lives in West Chester. What is Sight n Sound? I'm either having blueberry pie or TH peanut butter cup for desert...right after the NY strip steaks! Double yum! :)

Maizey......ok then you are farther out there like I tought. I have a friend who moved here from West Chester, she's always talking about it. Sight N Sound is a live theatre production. It is absolutely awesome, try to go if you ever get the chance. They have the theater (it's huge) set up in such a way that the stage is not only in front but also up both sides. You feel like you're right in the center of things. They use live animals and the shows are excellent!

They've been in Lancaster for years(was previoiusly Living Waters Theatre) and they just opened a second huge theater in Branson Missouri.Posted 16 years ago # -
Buckleysmom,....hahahaha :-)) well that's it then... Never heard of batteries I guess... but hey,... I tried to MAKE my own broom once... I failed miserably... in the end I put a spell on a dustpan.. but it didn't fly too well either...
I guess I'll stick with the bus for now...
And as for the icecream... Holland is famous for it's different kinds of cakes and also cheeses. I looooove cheese. Gouda, Edammer, Maaslander, Milner, Old Amsterdam,... oh yummyyummyyummy....
The chocolate chip cookies did waft towards here too, from the usa, but they put them in packages with only 6 of them... I always feel ripped off.. I never buy them again... I'll stick with cheese thank you very much... guess I'm a bit cheesy eh?
Posted 16 years ago # -
Freebird....the only broom type thing I have that takes batteries is my dustbuster, but that would be like riding one of those old
banana seat bikes and I always hated those things.Oooooohhhhh cheese......mmmmmmmmmm.......my second favorite food. You probably get the really good stuff where you are.
Posted 16 years ago # -
hahahahah, one can just imagine... it's a complete old Disney cartoon... Dustbuster comes to life... probably around halloween too :-)))

i love the dutch cheeses!
and, although i've only been to holland once (actually twice, but the first time i was 13yrs old and only there for 2 days.....with my grandparents.), i love the netherlands! the country is beautiful, the people are wonderful and the art (and architecture) is amazing. i hope i can get there again in my lifetime.
-------------------------------
oh! i almost forgot the oliebollen!
one of the best things ever!

do you think i used enough exclamation points?

Re: The original topic, one thing anyone who has any kind of blog or website can do, is to put the GOTD ticker somewhere on their site, even if the site isn't a software site.
In fact, I have added a section to my main website, to recommend freeware that I've found to be really excellent, as a way to thank and give some exposure to the developers homepages. I have put the GOTD ticker on that page. My website isn't a software site at all, and I figure that maybe the fact that my site has nothing to do with software or promoting software, may make my recommendations be taken even more seriously. After all, some of the best advertising anyone can get, is recommendations made by satisfied users!

Hi
Buckleysmom,FunkyTake a look at those Oliebollen and Appelflappen (Apple folds) (and more Dutch recipes ) ... !!
Quite taste you know ...but a wee bit high on calories..
And no , I am not.
:)Nice vid Freebird!

@ Buckleysmom : Heeeey!! Oliebol is a sweetened dough ball with raisins in them, and then they are fried in oil. The appelflap almost needs no translation. It is just that, apple in a flap of dough.
The oliebol and appelflap are traditional munching things for old and new year.... especially old years eve, the hours before countdown... we stuff ourselves with them, and if you watch the presentation I've linked to, you will see, that a little past halfway, you can see an "OLIEBOLLENKRAAM"... which means as much as oliebollen stand...
these snacks are quite fat though... and no where to be bought during the year. Only after christmas...so, now that I have defended my home language...
I agree, the words are weird. whahahahahaha :-))
@spiritwolf: Good idea! thanks! will do.

Sure wish I hadn't just read all those recipes... time for 'brunch' here and my stomachs already growling. Anyone of those sound yummy right now!
Posted 16 years ago # -
Oh.....I get it.....Oliebollen = fastnachts and appleflaps = apple pie. Same food, just different names. Note: fatsnachts don't have raisins....no one would ruin a delicious fastnacht by puting something even remotely healthy like a raisin in it. Oh but yummy to the max...... she says whith tongue hanging out and drool dripping to the floor.....
Posted 16 years ago # -
Weird..doesn't look like 'oliebollen' at all.
To eat a Fastnacht the proper Pennsylvania Dutch way GERMAN FASTNACHTS nor does this Fastnachts , a Pa. Dutch Shrove Tuesday Tradition ?Posted 16 years ago # -
freebird- for some reason i'm being told the video is not available.
when i was in delft it was right around christmas. my (ex)father-in-law kept talking about the oliebollen and i thought he was making it up. then he told me that if i wanted to try them, i needed to hurry because they don't sell them after new years. i didn't believe him. luckily, i did try them before they were gone, because he was telling the truth!. although, i had them without raisins. i should say that my f-i-l is a well known bs artist, so i had reason to not believe him. plus, as bk pointed out oliebollen sounds made up. but to the american ear, most of the dutch language sounds made up!
spiritwolf- i'm not sure if i've said this already, but welcome to the forums!

also i wasn't sure where to post this, so i'm attaching the link to where i did post:

For some years (to be honest 50 ! unbelievable!) ago, I was my first and only time
in NL, for 2 weeks. I remember an Indonesian specialty which you could buy with fries at a street kiosk, it was very spicy, don't remember the correct name something like:
nesse / nisse bolle ? I couldn't get enough of them.Posted 16 years ago # -
@ greylox Nasi Ballen! hahahaha, they are very nice. rice with veggies and meat and spices... or nasi balls...
@ funkymom, let me try that again.... it should play just fine :-(

I hope this one works. I put in all kinds of holland stuff... even the music.
:-))
If that doesnt work then you might consider downloading the entire file, but be warned, it is 86 mb. (!)
