I am having problems also, after opening a program using windows vista, my computer can’t find them. I have even done a complete search on the name, even in hidden folders. Guess I am stupid. Can someone please help me? Also I would like to thank Ambrosia for telling me how to get here to ask the question and also the makers of this site, I think you are all wonderful.

I don't have vista either, but did you install it logged in as administrator and are logged in with another name now?
That, I believe, will hide it from you.

Same here Sherry .. welcome. I don't have Vista, but as LeKanaw and goodgotd said, perhaps someone will log in that might be able to help you. Makes no sense that you were able to open your programs and then they've just disappeared. Maybe they're now a sub-directory under a differently named directory?

Sherry......welcome.......sorry for yet another let down, but I also don't use Vista, HOWEVER.....hubby does so I will ask him about it and I'll get back to you tomorrow. Maybe in the meantime someone else will be able to help, otherwise I'll see you tomorrow. G-night!

Sherry, not sure what you mean by "OPENING a program"... did you mean "downloading a program" or do you mean after a successful installation the desktop shortcut can't find the target?
Recently, I believe the GAOTD downloads have begun defaulting to C:\GAMES unless you specify a different target. That would be the first place to look.
Obviously, a search by software name wouldn't turn up the downloaded file if, as is sometimes the case, the filename was different than the title. You might be more successful running searches limited by the following parameters:
When Modified: within last week
File Name = just type .zip OR type .exe OR use "compressed file" - should be under Advanced Options in XP, not sure about Vista
File size = Large (more than 1MB)
Search C: and check Subfolders (wouldn't likely be in Hidden files)
In case you don't know this, when it comes to GAOTD downloads, you won't be able to activate anything that was downloaded but not installed BEFORE its 24 hours window closed.

Sherry.....sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I couldln't find this thread, it wouldn't come when I did a search till I accidently spelled vista without the a, just vist, then it came up.......go figure. Anyway, hubby says Vista does it's own thing when running a search so you have to go into your index settings in control panel and tell it to search for .exe files. Then when you search on the program name it should be able to find it. I hope this helps, if not or if I'm not understanding your problem, let me know.

Ok thanks for all the help. I still can't find them. I am running as administrator. Here is what is happening: I download the program and game to a destination. I got to that destination, double click on the program and vista unzips and it activates. Then when I got run or play it, it is gone and when searching for it, it is gone. Buckleysmom I even did the search in control panel as your husband suggested. Still no such luck. Either way thank you all for your help and for the great sight.

Sherry - I run vista home premium on my laptop although, not a big fan of it.Have gone and checked the games/programs that I D/L from GAOTD and they always install to
C:\Program Files\Name of vendor or game,so I checked the program files and found all of them.If I'm understanding your posts it seems you have also done this.
This is what I do to keep track of anything from GAOTD.
1.Create a folder named (GAOTD Installs)within this folder are 2 subfolders(GAOTD GAMES)and(GAOTD Prgrams). Now when I D/L game/program from the site, I choose save when the window pops up, and I save to the respective folder. So at this point you now have a unzipped folder in a subfolder, either games/program.Now when you right click on the zipped folder,(depending on your unzip program)you should have a choice called, unzip here, this will open it in the same subfolder you have D/L to,basically this will keep it all in one place. At this point you will now have the (setup file, activate file, and readme file). After you have opened the readme file and done what it says, always activate before the 24 hr. period is up,and then check the help option in the game/program to make sure it has installed and activated to the full version.
Another thing to do is to watch the path that the D/L wants to install to (copy this down). It's been awhile since I have D/L from the site so I can't remember when the path shows up for the install, but it seems to always default to the C:\program files\Name of game or program.
After having done the above I immediately follow the path and create a icon shortcut if the game/program has not done so,and if given the option for a shortcut on the desktop, check it.You can then create a game folder on your desktop with all game shortcuts. Now at this point your most likely thinking,( Geesshhh!!! this still isn't helping me find the ones that are missing??!!!)...Well!! Then!! If thats your attitude...Don't take that tone of voice with Me Missey!!!... After all I'm just trying to help!!!!
Bwhahahahaha!!! Sorry could'nt help myself just having a little fun.So hope this helps, other members have given you some helpful advice and sometimes it can be lost in the translation,as what to do.If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask,I will be more then glad to confuse you even more.LOL!!
Always remember there are worse things in life that can happen. After all there just games, and to take your mind off it,contemplate about this,If a cow laughs, will it squirt milk out it's nose??? Bwhahahahaha!!! Just can't help it!! Must be the meds.

You just had to start trouble again, didn't you!!?
Thats because I am "all nice and sweet and helpful".I saw what you are trying to do on the other thread. Hmmmm!!I wonder who said this? "I'm the Clowness around here, so a Big Welcome. scubaguy, thank you so much, that must be my problem. With Vista you just have to double click on a zip folder and it opens it and puts it where it wants too. I wilL have to get winzip so I can pick where it goes. Just last time I got winzip it had virus's attach to it, so I have been scared to try it again. Thank you everyone, you are all so nice on here.

scuba, all your suggestions are well and good.. but when I download, I save the zip file to desktop, then I've made a 'game' directory and all the games go there, instead of the program file folder. And, I also did the same thing.. made a game folder on the main screen and plop everything there. Of course at this point, I've forgotten what most of the games are! Wonder if I need to start making sub, sub directories?
Also, when they give options on where to put the start up command, I've got a 'game' directory for that too instead of filling up my start menu.Posted 16 years ago # -
Sherry - your welcome,I did notice in your last post you said,"With Vista you just have to double click on a zip folder and it opens it and puts it where it wants too.".In order to get the options window for the choice of unzip here you must right click the zipped file.
Also take a look at copmoms post above.
People have different ways of organizing their folders and desktops so pick the way that is easiest for you.
What program are you using to unzip files,if your not using Winzip? After reading your original post again and if you couldn't find the files in C:\program files\vendor or game,I'm just wondering if you actually activated it within the 24hr. time limit?

Ohhh Ahhhh Ummmm, u think I'm Cutesy and Sweet?? I'm blushing!!! How nice of you, to say such nice things!! Thank you!! {~.~}
Yeah right, this strategy will not work, you... you... uhhh... scoundrel??
About the games, donno if it helps anybody, but my files were a mess from so many games.
So what I did was, in the program files divide them by cies i.e. Alawar, Merscom, Axysoft, etc.
The shortcut on the desktop, I filed by categories, i.e. Match3, Platforms, Arkanoids, etc.
Mind u, I'm on XP, so this may not apply to the Vista ppl, and I'm sure u all have better filling systems. But for now, that's what I found better to help w the craziness in my games folders...=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=
BTW, I'm just amazed, I'm actually writing arkanoid/match3 and Alawar/Merscom.
Geeee, 7 months ago I didn't even know a RTS from a RPG and Alawar could have been a food sub-group for all I knew!!I have to thank WR for all that info!! And GOTD also, of course!

scubaguy, Vista must have it's own unzip file. When I got this computer, a friend told me all you have to do is double click on any zip folder and it would unzip, so that is what I have done since I got it. When I had my old computer, I downloaded winzip and the file had a virus in it. I really hate windows Vista though nd would never recomend it to anyone.
