Bet I could get better results with the the Canon and a closeup lens, using manual focus and exposure settings.
Really need to get the dust off of everything and get the slides perpendicular and centered to the lens. It does work extremely fast; drop in slide, snap picture, remove slide and drop in another. There is a stop screw located at the bottom of the slide holder for vertical adjustment. Tilting the whole assembly downward assures that the slide gets seated against the back edges each time one is dropped in.
I have an old Busch Pressman-Model C 2"X3" that I could take apart and use parts for making something better. It has a nice glass focusing screen that could be used to diffuse light and a sliding rack that would allow for mounting everything perpendicular and fine adjustment for distance. I don't know if I want to destroy the camera though. I don't know how to evaluate it to know its worth.
Here are a few completed ebay listings:

Oh, they are doing maintenance.Posted 16 years ago # -
personally I'd hang on to the history and use something easier to replace and add more light.
yes manual focus may be (would) be better, but there are more ways to get focus lock, and ways to get light diffused as well.
That Busch can't be replaced.
Lemme think on it for a bit first, come up with some alternates...
divshare's up at 5:50 am pst, 8:50 est. you're in the US, so sources I see you can find, and if nothing else there's mail. going out to get my month's meds, will hit a dollar tree and see what can be had cheap.

All of these things are well and good.. but what about me? I don't have slides, I have negatives.
And another thought, I'd been looking for a 4in1 printer that does negative/slides, but then realized that's only going to print a photo of them.
What I want is to be able to put them on the computer so I can go through them and choose what I want to print, etc. So using the camera is best for me I believe.
I told hubby what I'd really like to do is get all those negatives on the machine, and then make a CD or DVD for each of the 4 kids for Christmas so they'd also have all the OLD pictures from way back when. So I've got to be able to put negatives on the camera so I can upload to the computer. Any suggestions??Posted 16 years ago # -
here: http://www.shotcopy.com/copyneg.htm
and as I said, I figure to treat them as slides and invert the color in an editing program. have to make a light block to get each negative separated and framed- not a problem. slide scanner my tush.
maizey, note I'm not going to have a cam like that to tear apart, and the M517 doesn't *have* manual focus, so I *will* react, adapt and overcome. no need to rush.
I added one phrase to today's itinerary, and present it for your consideration: Thrift Shops.

Have you considered this? It costs $99.95, plus shipping, although I've seen it advertised occasionally with no shipping charge:
"The Slide And Negative To Digital Picture Converter" by Hammacher Schlemmer -
http://www.hammacher.com/publish/74083.asp?promo=homepage"This device converts old 35mm slides and film negatives into digital images, allowing you to easily preserve your memories without having to rely on a conversion service. Slides and negatives are placed into a tray that aligns each properly; the touch of a button scans the image instantly. It has a 5MP CMOS sensor that provides 10 bits per color channel for data conversion and uses fixed focus and automatic exposure control and color balance, resulting in clear digital images without loss of quality. It can scan images up to 1,800 dpi and uses three white LEDs as a back light source. For photo transfers and power, it has a USB cable (requires USB 2.0) that plugs into a PC running Windows XP (not Vista) and includes software that allows you to edit, crop, and resize your slides as well as convert your negatives into positives. 6 1/2" H x 3 1/2" W x 3 1/2" D. Copmom, haven't been able to catch up/keep up with forums, but saw your query and wonder if by "realized" you mean you have verified that the printer (which printer - Model #) only prints from negatives, or does it have a memory spooler of some sort that allows a "print to file" option?
Another option might be to have Kodak or one of the other processors run the negatives through and create on-line proof sheets and let them create a CD from those you want. Only problem might be that a mass production facility will be playing the averages and not offer precise colors, resulting in some that are too blue-hued or washed out or whatever.
Gotta run.

Check out this camera and accessories that I have AND have absolutely no idea what to do with it. It can got through a roll of film in about a minute. My uncle paid thousands for this camera and all the lenses and accessories back in the 80's. Now you can't get squat for it. I think that 2 of the lenses go to another Rollei 35mm SLR that I've got. This camera was a failed attempt to sell a camera with all the features of a large format at a less expensive price tag. There are not too many of these around. This particular camera body was a demo that was given to camera shops so that people could take them home and try them out. That's why it has orange control buttons.
___________EDIT_______________
I just noticed I have a Rollei A26 in the slideshow too.Posted 16 years ago # -
Rune.. what I meant by 'realized' was I 'think' when you put a negative in some of these photo printers, that simply means they just print the picture... not saving them to the computer. Must do some more checking into exactly what they DO!
And, like you, I'm falling totally behind on staying up with all that's going on in these forums.. keep getting sidetracked with all the links! I think my brains starting to go on information overload! Can't tell you how many pieces of paper I have sitting in front of me for jotting down all my notes! (And don't tell me to use notepad!)Posted 16 years ago # -
It appears (see picture of lioness on page) that PhotoFiltre 6.3.1 can reverse negative colors to positive or vice versa. One item down.

god, I'd love to play with that camera and the lenses, but just what to use it for.. convert to digital somehow....
waitasec- not worth squat? I suspect you could get a bit for it...

Look at what these went for:

yeah, ok. but yours is the rare orange trim... and even 500 clams is more than squat, imho. and it isn't old enough to be a historic artifact. I'd still love to tinker with it, but...
Posted 16 years ago # -
I thought about playing with it too but film cost so much to develop and it can take 3 fps. Ok it's not squat but it just doesn't see right when they charge hundreds for just a new lens for other cameras. It kind of makes me sick. That's why I haven't put it or some of the others on ebay...yet.

velly, velly crude, but take a look at these old slides I got at one of the thrift stores.
light source was a 3-LED 'touch lamp' in the bottom of an upside down 50-cd 'cake box cover, stage was a cd crystal case lid, diffuser was a dc-2120 data tape cartridge storage box, or the same with a scrap of envelope paper under the stage.
had the cameras on my mini-pod on an old sat receiver cover to keep all the elements stable in reference to each other. Just for fun.

http://img146.imageshack.us/my.php?image=0001sl000pvix4.jpgI think the slides are sepia, not color- the leds added a blue cast.
Posted 16 years ago # -
goodgotd, those are really RED. Sepia would be more yellowed. Don't you think? Maybe it's the lighting. I tried a LED flashlight, blueish tint..yuck, before settling on the incandescent. I'm sure we can find better choices.
I still want to figure out how to do this with the canon and closeup lens. More mega pixels, 7.1, and higher resolution. The Sony is only 1.2 mp.
Posted 16 years ago # -
the site just come up for you too?
yeah, maybe they were stored wrong, or ere meant to have a countertint filter when projected. neat find, though, and cheap.

I'm going to do a little more digging through the photographic supplies. I've got a couple of ideas in my head...just have to find the parts to make something.
In the mean time look at my stereoscope. I got it and several cards about 20 years ago for $15 at an antique shop. I picked up more cards and some old photos at various places over the years. I love looking at these old 3D shots. It's like a window into the past.

I rigged together a new light box. It's metal and easier to get squared with camera. Took a few shots with the Sony before it's battery went dead. Getting a fair amount of lens flare. I think its because of light emitting from around the outside of the slides. Next I'll make a slide holder with something to block the light. I held the slides by hand for these test shots. The slides are from 1954 and are rather dark to begin with. Below are examples and pictures of the new box.

While I was going through camera bags I took pictures of their contents. I went through less than half of this stuff. It looks like there is a lot of items, lenses and accessories that don't belong to anything else. I don't recall seeing cameras for many of these lenses. I don't know why my uncle would have bought all of this stuff unless he was trying to get several different outfits together and just picked up what he could find at the time.
Here are pictures of what was in the bags:

Maizey, that's quite an eclectic collection. They all seem to be in pretty good condition, so I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't a few like-minded collectors out there who'd pay $$$ to acquire the stuff. I still keep my old Pentax SLR and a bunch of lenses tucked away, figuring that in a hundred years they might fetch enough to buy a cup of coffee. BTW- I have the purple version of that strap below the MickeyMouse strap in #10. Purple's a kinda lucky color for me, the reasoning being that I've never been run over by a purple elephant, truck or crazed horse. Coincidence? I think not!
Posted 16 years ago # -
Hardly... a purple accent on a camera strap in the late 60's didn't send the message it would these days! Dayglo didn't mean gayglo. I can only guess what message the "ensemble" pictured (not to mention the effeminate pose) is meant to send. "He" certainly earns a guest spot on Seinfeld. (not that there's anything wrong with that)
