I downloaded this but am not sure where to install it. Is it ok to install it on the main hard drive since I'm not trying to recover anything at this time? While I was installing it, a box comes up saying it it's installed to a drive where files are to be recovered, data may be permanently written over and rendered non-recoverable.
Thanks.

Hi Sidney,
If you have nothing to recover right now - go ahead and install it on your active partition.
The first screen you get is merely a self extractor.
Choose a directory to extract the files to( C:/Easus or whatever)
Then browse to this directory and run DRW.exe to install the program. For optimal results ,*recovery attempts* should be made to a different medium (another (usb)drive, partion or usb flash drive)
Small subnote:
To make a second install:
just copy your program folder with DRW in it to another (usb)(flash)drive .
But to run the program on this device you will have to double click the ‘DRW.exe’ file
(or make a shortcut manually)Posted 16 years ago # -
Robert? Could you possibly give instructions for copying this folder to a flash drive? I'm kind of a newbie, and just bought my first flash drive. I plugged it in....found the DRW folder...hit copy...highlighted the "E" drive that showed up and hit copy. It was so fast that I kind of doubt that I did this correctly.
Thanks,

Hi Dianne,
Please make sure your flash drive is formatted.
Then:
1.Browse to the *program* folder in which you did install DRW (you did first run the extraction and install the app by double clicking DRW.exe?)
2.Rightclick this folder ,hit copy
3.Explore your E drive ,rightclick and hit paste to copy this folder
(or simply drag and drop this folder to E:\ , selecting 'copy here')
4.Explore the DRW folder on E:\ and find the 'DRW.exe' (size=64 kb)
Please let me know if you managed ;-)

You have to install the software on another partition or a thumb drive contrary to the drive you wish to recover data from.
So if you want to recover from c: then install it on a thumb drive or a partition that is not c:

Hi Robert,
Thanks for you help, but I guess this is all over my head. I don't even know how to format the flash drive...lol.
I think I did the install correctly..but it took me awhile to figure it out. At least I managed to get a desktop icon that I can click on and open the program.
I'll print out your instructions in case I ever figure all of this out.
And thank you too Lee, but I think it's too late...I'm pretty sure it's already installed on C

Just to see what happened I plugged in the flash drive that I tried to use for the DRW. As soon as I plugged it in, a sreen popped up with the DRW4.3.6 folder. When I double clicked it...there were about 24 items related to it. Does that mean I did it successfully?

Diane,
Yep.26 to be precise.
Now locate 'DRW.exe' (size=64 kb) and double click it.
The Data Recovery Wizard program should launch from your flash drive on any computer.
