Hello, dudes. I love to play games and it’s like a passion to me. But recently I have been facing problems in copying games from my friends pc.The problem is that the games I copy in my pc do not play properly, they have some files missing due to which they function improperly. Do you have any ideas regarding this which will help me to play them at ease?

welcome graham!
i can't help you, i know nothing about copying games, but i guarantee if you stick around you will have lots of advice!

You haven't been very specific (i.e., game name), graham. If you're trying to copy freeware games, problems may involve:
required system files or updated drivers
right version of Java/DirectX the appl was built to run with
minimum hardware requirements to run the appl
Going straight to the horse's mouth (to the developer's site) is the best course of action.OTOH, if you're trying to copy commercial software (or limited time "free" software from GAOTD) that's licensed to one computer, then not surprisingly, you may be missing the registration passkey (registry data) that allows access.
There is no legitimate workaround if it's a copyright and licensing issue. Anything coming via GAOTD offers will be blocked from reregistering after the initial 24-hour window. There is NO workaround period. Dubious hack sites sometimes offer cracks, but that is illegal, risky from a PC security and stability standpoint, and certainly not something ethical people like regular GAOTD members condone.

also, rule 7 in the forums rules says asking is a no-no. Other than that, it's been covered to a 'T' by Rune.

Not also that but it can be illegal to do so. Unless you have the license for the extra PC it could be illegal and you could go to jail...

Also, taking games illegally suppresses the advancement of the gaming industry because the money that would have been earned by the developer would 'probably' have been plowed back in to research and development to improve on the games we get.
I wonder how many millions (probably billions) the developers have lost through piracy? If we had an honest chip inside our brains and no one cheated maybe we would already have photo realistic games (which is what I'm hoping for in the next decade or at least before I die)I want to be able to walk the mountains of the world in the comfort of my own home (as I can no longer do it in the real world because of that fateful day when I was hit by a car and disabled).............
oop's sorry, I got a little waffly there, but I'm sure you catch my drift, lol here goes again...........
There is so much freeware stuff around now there really is no need to cheat, and when you consider that you can get many of the big dollar games for next to nothing now, there really is no excuse for stealing. I just picked up Twin Worlds (released less than a year ago) after it was reduced by $40 for less than $30 and that was for the collector’s edition. It's a cousin of Oblivion with a big world environment to explore. You can pick up Battlefield Vietnam for $10 from places like Wal-Mart and the original Battlefield 1942 with both the expansion packs can be picked up for just a little more. There are also loads of Abandonware titles that are really cool. Someone posted a link to a site that holds loads of abandonware titles:
……….. and check out the following threads from these forums to pick up loads of free games, both freeware and more:

or better still check out the games discussion thread of these forums as loads of community members have posted details and links of a multitude of games from virtually all genres that I can think of.

There are quite a lot of games that have been released less than a year that have been reduced in price dramatically for example Silent Hunter 4 which I paid around $90 for last March (It came in a special tin with loads of extra's like a sound track CD, medals, mouse mats books etc) is now selling for less than $20 and that's a brilliant Submarine simulator. Armed Assault (which has a lot of similarities to the Battlefield series and is the sequel to the Operation Flashpoint series) has been reduced to a third of what it cost when it was released last February, and titles like Company of Heroes and Space Force: Rogue Universe have also been reduced drastically. I could go on almost indefinitely, but I'm sure I've made my point yet again...
buy buy buy is my motto, then games will get better and better :).
I'm not without guilt though, but I've made up for it big time over the last several years. I always buy the games that I really want and I do still spend an inordinate amount of money on games virtually every week.

Be careful of so-called "abandonware". Just because it's old, doesn't mean it does not have a valid copyright. I found an older version of "Sherlock" on such a site once and promptly notified the copyright holder (Everett Kaser). The game is still in use and this was an older form. If you used the link I found, you rob him of his rightful compensation for his work on the original and updates to the game.
Everett is just an example. I cannot guess how many others are "assumed" to be abandoned because they are old.

I shouldn't, but I'm gonna play devil's advocate and suggest that at least some illicit copy use ends up as extra licenses for the developer,- to get the latest version, to play online, to replace copies that disk/OS crashes took out, etc.
That is a large part of the idea behind gaotd, right? In general terms- I'm not saying it's right.
But there is another way to look at it.
As with music downloads (last canadian study I saw found downloaders buy more cd's on average than non-downloaders) and the Baen Free Library (go there and read the introduction, it's worth it) and Baen promo CD's, it's a way to get customers interested in more.
Those Baen books (and while Webscriptions started as just Baen Books and Del Rey, since then E-Reads, Meisha Merlin, SRM Publisher, Subterranean Press, and Tor Books have joined.) are not public domain, partial, or old at all.
And all in the free library were placed there by the author's decision.

goodgotd,
Comments here provide good fodder for a philosophical discussion of ethics and copyright law.
I'm tempted to launch a TALKS thread on the subject...
free of charge, of course...
and watch laymen (er, laypeople) from all sides of the multi-dimensional aisle engage in cogent discourse.Posted 16 years ago # -
That's a cool idea Runsage, and thanks for the link to the library. there are some readable titles goodgotd. :)

grahamlarkes i hope i spelled your name correctly :) Anyhow if it is games from here that you are trying to copy .. If you are patient a lot of the games are repeated at times you just have to be patient and visit game giveaway every day as you might be surprised and don't go by all the negative reviews as at times the numbers are correct i know that is factual huh whiterabbit:) lol Until they come around play the ones they do offer on a daily basis i am sure you will enjoy some but not all and just remember they are free for the taking for that day ... Enjoy your stay here and don't think you are trying to rob anyone like some are suggesting think you just didn't realize they had a time limit on them

I'll assume your old enough to know right from wrong and give you the benefit of the doubt as a mature person. Here are a few applications I have successfully used myself to that end:
Alcohol 120%
http://trial.alcohol-soft.com/en/alcohol_info.phpBlindwrite
http://www.blindwrite.com/CloneCD
I leave you to find your own links because it's been a while and three companies now use the product name. There's another one which escapes me at the moment that would satisfy the nanny state fans here. Its copies will only function on the PC upon which the copy was made.
It's horrible when little people get their hands on original game discs. Copies are the only way to go.

RunesageMagik, I'd participate gladly in such a debate- of course I sorta showed that already with my post- but I'll say up front that perceived ethics and copyright law are mightily out of true with reasoned morality and the *intent* of copyright- IMO.
Whiterabbit, if you like the library, hie yourself to baencd at the Fifth Imperium, and see my latest post on it. Be prepared to be awed.
The free library is just a small taste of what Baen has made available free of charge.
I don't offhand recall if it's US only or not, but if you know any handicapped folks, you might want to look at webscriptions free for disabled readers, as Webscriptions is awesomely bigger, easily subsuming both the free library and baencd.
And quite economical, compared to even paperbacks, much less hardbound, to see if you like an author or series.
As I am disabled, I have (literally) free run of the site, and the advance reader copies whet the appetite!
cubanPOWER, those programs will copy game discs, but often the copies will not work to run or install the game. I leave it to the astute searcher to find the site dedicated to keeping originals out of the hands of the careless, as *i'm* not going to name it.
But there is one.

Right! this is what you meant, lol. You asked in another post whether I'd seen the Baen library, and I was a little confusd. i'm a little behind in reading many of the threads here despite it being my number one place to visit these days. i'll peruse that library just as soon as I've made myself a nice cup of coco. :) Thanks manregards
