Testing blockquote to see what it looks like versus
code. Until I have a look at this post I'm not sure of the effect. Perhaps code allows me to do something like this
although I'm thinking I really should have done <strong><em>this</em></strong> which actually shows the underlying code while code changes the font to monospaced

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, Robert! I followed links in the GOTD Guide, but they led to this topic, wading through which I found a lot of unhelpful info, including some just plain wrong answers.
I'm going to suggest to Chip and GMMan that they link to your post in the Guide (not the whole topic), or that it should be a sticky.

It appears the toolbar has an option to specify custom codes in HTML and Bulletin Board Code, as well.

I did a quick search and found that there are free sites, forums and blogs with instructions on how to use BB code.

I think used in moderation such emicons should be okay to be used, especially if they are used in the correct context. Though I do agree that if they were abused it would make the thread they are used in maybe a little too much to take in, epspecially if you've just got up. 
Looking at the three emicons above I reckon the first one would be head ache inducing, the other two are quite sedate.
The first one is used on my main board - very occasionally (it's part of the standard EXTENDED set of emoticons) and for the purpose it shows. If you use that, you've probably already got the headache! And "misery loves company."
